Title: DIR-601 Signal Strength Issues
Post by: BillinSDCA on October 19, 2013, 01:14:49 PM
On inSSIDer For Home software my signal strength on my DIR-601 shows @ 65-70 dBm.  Other neighboring routers are showing in the high 80's -  low 90's.

I've switched and tested all channels and the best I get is on ch 1+5 setting.

Put some aluminum foil around antenna and the signal strength went from @ 55 dBm to the 65-70.

What can I do to get better signal strength?  The router is positioned in line of sight of my laptop so you would think I'd get a stronger signal.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bill

The 600 Series are known for the greatest signal ranges. How far is the client device from the router?

I just downloaded FW 2.01A on Hardware B1. So is this one different from the 1.02NA mentioned? Just downloaded it yesterday from dlink.ca...

v2.01 is for Rev B model routers, v1.02 is for Rev A model routers only. They are not cross platform-able.

Thanks. Just chucked the DI-524 for the 601 and like the really working MAC filtering over wifi (reason of using 601 as WAP is that when on [main] linksys router switching on/off wifi will reboot whole router losing all kinds of linkage). Still signal strength is OK, just will not get higher than 65Mbps on n-only settings, though it is supposed to be an N150. Still working on that one. Signal strength is OK, considering the walls and floors it has to go through. But not optimal. Will try the infamous do-it-yourself antenna-booster method (cutout covered with alu-foil) to see if that helps to boost...

Ok, Ya I have a 601 as well. It's kind of low budget for a router so the WiFi kind of follows. It does good as a simple wired AP though.

You should see 130Mb on Wifi I believe on single N mode. Depends on your devices and what they support. Also use WPA2/AES only helps.

N-only, WPA2/AES, yup, did al that, got the t-shirt, still trying to coax it to 100+. Most devices are android tablets, some Win-laptops, rest is hard-wired, and no wifi for those. Have set up many wired/wireless routers in my life. But every new one is just like an adventure (or a box of chocolates?).

Will try to wireless connect a laptop under Ubuntu to see if that could improve throughput because of the more efficient TCP/IP protocol stack implementation, but hopes are not that high.

As you said it. This is a low-budget thing. Bought it yesterday in London Drugs for CAD 19 new in box. For that kind of money you cannot expect $100 performance. And I only use it for simple non-demanding stuff.

Still... Would like to tweak and nudge to coax just a little bit more out of it.

Thanks for the speedy reaction...

That would be about it. Could test with SHort GI ON then OFF and see. I don't think this router has HT20/40 Co-existence option under advanced/advanced wireless.
