Automatic Time Configuration - Enable NTP Server
« on: March 09, 2012, 10:54:34 AM »

Does this feature work when the DAP-1360 is in "repeater" mode? I am repeating a signal from a DIR-655. I tried many different servers without success. When I enable this feature and select  "save settings" the DAP resets and date/time is reset to some initial value. A call to an NTP server is never made and the date/time is never correct. I am repeating a signal from a DIR-655.

Has anyone had success with this feature?

Try inputting the NTP server address as 192.168.0.1 and see if it can get it from the 655 router?

Can you manually set the DAP?

Time still can not be set on DAP-1360 Hardware Rev A, Firmware V1.10 Purchased 7/2011
When you set the NTS option the time changes to 12/31/1969. A good year but the wrong one.

Does this feature work when the DAP-1360 is in "repeater" mode?

I now have two DAP-1360s; one configured as an AP, and one configured as a Repeater. I can't get automatic time configuration to work on either. At this point I've had to settle with setting the time manually. I've tried FuzzyNutz' suggestion of using the gateway IP address, but that didn't work for me. I've also noticed that I can't ping the NTP server from either DAP-1360, but that may be due to the way I have my network configured (the DSL modem and router are both configured as NATs).

If anyone figures this out, I'd love to know the answer.

I recommend using only one NAT.

Double NAT

I recommend using only one NAT.

The double NAT hasn't really caused me any problems, though I've had to become an "expert" at port forwarding to get a couple of things to work. As for it being the source of the Auto Time Configuration problem, I don't think it's the cause (though I could be wrong). Even though I can't ping the NTP server from the DAP-1360, I can ping it from my laptop when it's connected wirelessly to the DAP-1360. Go figure?

I've also noticed that I can't ping the NTP server from either DAP-1360, but that may be due to the way I have my network configured (the DSL modem and router are both configured as NATs).

I think I may have a partial solution to the NTP server problem. The fact that I couldn't even ping the D-Link NTP server from the DAP-1360 got me thinking, so I googled "ping fail". The first bit of useful information I came across said that if pinging the URL failed, but the IP address worked, then it was a DNS problem, not a ping issue. So I tried pinging the IP address for "ntp1.dlink.com" (205.171.76.135 or 61.67.210.241) from the DAP-1360, and it worked. So I setup the Automatic Time Configuration using the IP address (205.171.76.135) as the NTP Server. To see if it was working, I rebooted the DAP-1360. It restarted with a Jan 1 2000 date, but after I de-selected "Enable NTP Server", Saved Settings, re-selected "Enable NTP Server", and Saved Settings, it came back with the correct date and time. The date/time stamp in the logs are still wrong (Jan 1 00:00:00), immediately after a reboot, but eventually correct themselves. To me this would indicate a firmware issue, not a network or device configuration problem.

Can you connect the DAP directly to the ISP modem and test NTP services?

Can you connect the DAP directly to the ISP modem and test NTP services?

My wife is out of the house/office for the next 6 hours, so I've got a bit of time to troubleshoot a couple of network and telephone issues, including this one.

With the DAP connected directly to the DSL modem, the (apparent) NTP Server problem disappears completely. The time is set correctly when using either the URL or the IP address for the D-Link NTP Server. Furthermore, I can ping any URL I like from the DAP in this configuration.

So I'll still convinced that this is a DNS problem, to which the Double NAT configuration of my network MAY be contributing. Keep in mind that, even with the router setup as a NAT, I can still ping any URL from my laptop, when it's connected wirelessly to the DAP, even though I can't do it from the DAP. This tells me that there's a problem with the DAP.

Finally, to answer KE2QR's initial question, I've tried using the IP address (205.171.76.135) for the D-Link NTP Server with the DAP in Repeater Mode, and it does work.

I would presume that if the DAP is working directly connected in AP mode and the NTP services work here, then I don't think there is a problem with the DAP. Keep us posted on your test results when you get time.

As KE2QR has an almost identical router to mine, I'd be interested in knowing how it's configured.

Has anyone contacted DLink support, level 2 or higher to ask about this? I presume they would know if NTP is supported and in what modes it should be working.  ::)
