"Losing" internet while downloading
« on: February 24, 2012, 08:39:05 AM »

Hi guys, somehow my router just wont let me download or upload torrents like it used to. I can't get full speed while downloading anymore (went from 2.8 mb/s to around 800 kb/s), and most internet pages won't show while utorrent is downloading.

This was never an issue before at all, and I don't think there's been done anything to the router (a dir-655) other than forwarding a port.

Hardware Version: B1     Firmware Version: 2.00

I've tried to tamper with the QoS, that is removing it, and to fiddle a bit with some other settings, after releasing and renewing DHCP it worked like it should for 1-2 minutes, before slowly dropping again..

Does the happen if you turn OFF Torrents and say download something using a browser?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

I have fiberoptics, 25/25 line, guess it's a DSL connection.
The modem is a zyxel home central, that gives signal to both internet and tv. I phoned in and they bridged it for me.

I've tried all the options you mentioned, and it works fine for a minute or two, then it starts plummiting again..

Might put the routers IP address it gets from the ISP modem in the modems DMZ.

Does the speeds drop and using a non torrenting download as well?
Are other people connected to the router while your downloading?
Possible that torrent sites your visiting are slowing down the connection?
Are you seeding as well?

The tracker I'm using is a private one, and consists mostly of university dormrooms, seedboxes and private connections with good speeds, so I don't think that's the holdup. And yes, seeding 24/7, only lately seeding cramped my bandwith as well.
To be honest I haven't tried anything else than torrents, I'll get a linux distro through http asap.

No, ubuntu is flying down with a stable connection of 2.8 mb/s.

Google Chrome keeps complaining about DNS settings when utorrent is running, btw.

I would presume your torrent program is the cause of your issue then.

Been thinking that myself, but when it used to work perfectly for a long time, it seems kind of strange, doesn't it? :/

Yes seems strange however if something has changed the configuration of the torrent program or something in the connection between the torrent program or the host connection, this would or might change the way it has been performing. Has the program been updated? Might need to be updated or go back to a previous version. Might uninstall and reinstall and set it up again.

Yeah, it had to be downgraded due to some report-errors on some trackers, then upgraded again. But I think the issues started before the initial downgrade.

Might be the number of active torrents too though, not sure. Think I've read somewhere that the router might choke on too many packets or something in that direction, could that be it?

These routers can exceed several thousand connections so I don't think that's the problem unless your letting torrents run a foul and letting it hog everything. Again, this is problematic with Torrent as the program and everyones mind set is getting as many torrents come down or up as much as possible with out any regard to network throughput and networking capabilities if there systems. People need to understand that put SOME limits on the torrent program is needed in these cases.

Sorry for the bump, just thought I should mention that after disabling DHT in utorrent, things almost went back to the way I remembered them to be.

Copypasted from another site;

"DHT (Distributed Hash Table, technical explanation) is an addition to certain BitTorrent clients that allows them to work without a tracker. What this means is that your client will be able to find peers even when the tracker is down."

Yeah, I hope it can help others out as well, thanks for all the help btw :)
