DIR 857 - Firmware - Problem
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:29:38 PM »

HI all.  Have been using router for past few weeks...still experiencing log-out problems with router software.  Most times when any changes are made...e.g. time, adding a network item in set-up, adding mac address, the router will not re-boot...bounces user out without updating.  Basically any thing that requires a re-boot to save the change, the router doesn't respond to the command and boots out to a "cannot find router"  or connection lost.  And 1 out of 10 tries, the router will work as it should and present the re-boot now or later screen and allow for re-booting.   :-\ Very difficult to manage changes and a little bit frustrating.  Doesn't seem to matter if I use a password or not.  Any thoughts?  I never experienced this sort of issue with DIR 655.

I had a similar problem when first configuring this router and tracked it down to the:

Advanced -> QOS Engine -> Connection Type -> Auto-Detect

This seemed to cause my ISP (Shaw Cable) connection to fail 9 times out of 10.  I changed the:

Connection Type to "Cable Or Other Broadband Network" (I use a Motorola SB5102 Cable Modem for my ISP) and the problem went away.

You can also try locking down the connection speed to the cable modem using the:  "Advanced -> Advanced Network -> WAB Port Speed" selections rather than the default "Auto".  The Dir-857 can do gig-E on the WAN (internet) port and the auto-speed detection may not always work properly with some types of cable or DSL modems....

I did try the suggestions above...no difference.  So what I ended up doing was backing up the router's configuration and resetting back to factory defaults.  I then reloaded the configuation file and the router seems to operating well.  No unexpected bounce outs.  So i'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is resolved.  As a side note, I took the step of contacting dlink support...i got the impression the person i spoke to was surprised this router was out.  I guess they are not getting a lot of calls.
