The players are:
- DIR-857
- 1TB WD HDD connected to DIR-857 via USB
- WDTV Live - Set top
My PC can see the 1TB WD HDD browsering and mapping via Shareport or IP (using shareport to do this is IMO really bad)
IF DIR-857 is supposed to allow a HDD be shared via network, then why have shareport? My guess is that Dlink is hoping that we use it as a media server. Because my WDTV Live has the ability to see network shares, but it will never be able to see DIR-857 USB drive because the interface has no ability for you to create a network share.
Complaint #1 – Why would you create a storage device that can only be access via computer and browser. So if other users wanted to access the storage device from their PC I would have to install shareport on all PCs in the house.
Complaint #2 – Media server manual does not state what video formats it supports or does not support. Again the WDTV Live sees the media server but cannot see any videos. The folder so far has two files in its root direct. An ISO file and a MP4 file, but WDTV Live does not see anything.
For the amount of money we paid for this router is should do it all. My 2 year old Linksys E3000 can do some of the things that I just complain about. Even my Dlink NAS DNS-323 can create a share that WDTV Live can access. Note: the E3000 just did not have the speed to be able to handle 15 wireless devices and 5 wired device in my household.
The auto QoS and the speed so far are it’s only saving grace, but I’m thinking real hard about retuning the item for another vendor, because this is my 2nd Dlink device and the DNS-323 has also let me down.
Any suggestions? What video format does this thing support?
