DIR-632 Dropping Wireless
« on: February 18, 2012, 12:40:55 PM »

Hi,
I have just installed a DIR-632 Wireless N 8-Port Router. I am using a wide range of wireless/wired components (Comcast Infinity modem, WD Server, PCs, Macs, iPad, Kindle, Coby Tablet, network printer etc.). Everything seems to be working nominally and I can access all items.

The problem is that the wireless signal from the router fails every couple of hours. None of the components see any signal and therefore cannot connect. The wireless icon on the router is lit (green- no flashing). When I unplug and plug in the router all of the components see and join the network and all is well for another couple of hours.
I did not have this issue with my last router (Apple Airport).
Some components are within six feet of the router and get full bars. Other components are in a room upstairs and also get full bars when available. No wireless devices, microwaves etc. are in this section of the house.

no security activated during system testing
Hardware version - A1
Firmware Version - 1.01NA
802.11 mode - Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.11b
DHCP server - check
Enable Auto Channel Scan - check

Thoughts?

Thanks
Jim

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partiton and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Hi,
Sorry about opening this thread in the DIR-615 forum, I figured either 615 or 635 - Always my second choice.
I am using mixed G & N mode.
During system set-up I have not engaged any security protocols.
IPad, iMac, HP laptop, iBook, Coby Tablet, Tivo and Kindle are connected wirelessly.
There is a cordless phone in the house. I've seen no link to Loss of Signal (LOS) and calls. I've used both versions of Airport for the last several years with no apparent signal interference.
At the moment I see no external signals. Occasionally a very weak  (1 bar) unknown signal.
n/a

Thanks

This cordless phone run in the range of 2.4Ghz?
Let us know how G and N modes work out.
I would turn off WPS as well.

Hi,
The phone is a Panasonic that uses the frequency of 2.4 GHz - 2.48 GHz. I haven't seen any correlation with drop outs and calls.
I turned off WPS, unplugged and disconnected the telephone.
The signal lasted about 28 hours before failure last night. The previous set-up lasted about 24 hours.

The wireless set-up includes these defaults-
auto scan
Channel 6
channel width - 20 MHz

Thanks for your help so far.
Thoughts?

Try setting Manual channel 1, 6 then 11 from auto scan.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Hi,
Tried the settings you recommended. The wireless still disconnects after about 24 hours. I'm going to try manual channel 11.
After disconnect,  the wireless indicator on the router is still lit (and sometimes blinks), but none of my wireless units can see a signal. When I unplug and plug-in the power cable, the signal returns and everything reconnects.

Thoughts?

I would factory reset the router, set up from scratch and configure WiFi for Single mode G, manual channel of 11 and test again, if the router still drop the connection and devices can't get re-connected, I would either reload FW using the FW update sticky process information and or get the unit RMAd.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi,
Sorry to take so long getting back to you but I was trying a few things. I performed the factory reset, set single mode G and manual channel 11. At this point, the wireless signal failed after about four hours. I tried different modes and channels and it still failed every four hours or so. I turned WPS off, auto channel and g&n mode. The system now lasts from 24 to 48 hours and fails. It could be over night or while I'm working on something. I don't see any correlation to my or other activity.
I'm going to try to exchange the unit. The feature set is just what I require but I do need a reliable nexus for this system.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, return the unit or RMA it. Seems to have problems maintaining WiFi. Keep us posted on how it goes.

Thanks for the detailed fault finding procedure furry. I am experiencing the same issue.  It is not acceptable that the dropouts occur. But I will try thefirmware reload and see what happens.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Thanks for the detailed fault finding procedure furry. I am experiencing the same issue.  It is not acceptable that the dropouts occur. But I will try thefirmware reload and see what happens.

Hi All,
I returned the router through Amazon. I must compliment their return policy, I had a replacement the next day and free return postage.
Unfortunately the new router had the same problems. Right out of the box it failed after about seven hours. It had the same symptom, wireless indicator on and sometimes flashing, no signal present at any of my receivers. I turned off 'Wi-Fi protected Set-up (disabled). The unit continued to fail after about 24-48 hours.
I purchased an AirPort Extreme. I installed it with minimal customization and it has worked for two weeks with no failures.
Thanks for all of your help. I still think D-Link is a good product - although the DIR-632 may still have a couple of kinks  :(
I've used other D-Link products in the past and would recommend D-Link in the future.

Thanks again -
Jim

Install wireshark on yuor PC, then run it and look for arp requests asking who is 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.23 and so on right through to 192.168.0.254..when it will then repeat endlessly.

Just curious, I'm having an issue similar to yours on the wired interfaces.
