Xbox can't see DNS-323, but PS3, PC, WDTV, Asus O!Play, etc can
« on: December 23, 2009, 09:12:31 AM »

A bit of a strange one here, but my Xbox 360 (2 of them) can't see the DNS-323 (also 2 of them).

I have a PS3. PC, WDTV, Asus O!play, Popcorn Hour, etc.  and everything can work fine with the UPNP server on the DNS-323, but the Xbox 360 can't.  I've enabled and disabled the UPNP server, refreshed to scan for files, etc.  Very strange.

Thinking this may be an issue with the 360, I installed Twonky on a PC, and the 360 can see that, no problem.  But for some reason, I just can't get the 360s to see the DNS-323s. (firmware 1.06 and 1.07)

Everything that I've mentioned is wired in the house. And I'm running everything from a Linksys WRT54GGS +/- hubs/switches etc.  I think I've ruled out any hub/switch problem by having both devices plug directly into the same switch.

I'm baffled.  The only thing left to rule out is the router, just in case there is some incompatibility with that passing on the UPnP info between the DNS-323 and the 360.  But everything else works..

Has anyone seen an issue like this before?

Does your Xbox see any other media server on the network? If so how many?

My Xbox does see the Twonky server I setup on an XP machine, and I just fired up a Vista Home Premium machine, and it can see that as well. But, no DNS-323 :(

Try the following test and post up the results:

  • Ensure that UPnP is enabled on the DNS (note how many device on your LAN have UPnP enabled - suggest only leaving UPnP enabled on the DNS for the moment)
  • Create a folder as follows: \\<DNSDEVICENAME>\Volume_1\TESTUPNP
  • Copy a small number of files (10-20) to .\TESTUPNP (note the types [avi, mp3, etc.] of file and if metadata is present in file - ex: ID3Tag if MP3, etc.)
  • Set the UPnP Media Path in the DNS-323 to \\<DNSDEVICENAME>\Volume_1\TESTUPNP
  • Issue a refresh from within the DNS-323.
  • Confirm media is displayed on the XBOX360

Few points to keep in mind:

  • Multiple folder/sub-folder (long paths) will trip up the DNS-323 & XBOX360
  • Long filenames and special characters will trip up the DNS-323 & XBOX360
  • UPnP implementation on the XBOX360 & PS3 has shortcomings
  • DNS device UPnP implementation was never fully detailed by D-Link Engineering - ex: what ID3TAG are supported, is there a file limit, what are all the media formats support, etc.  1.08 Release Notes provides some additional info ... still not enough IMHO
  • DNS/WINS resolution and WORKGROUP name does trip up the XBOX360
  • A factory reset of the DNS-323 settings may be required - this should not affect the data on the HDD's

UPnP, XBOX360, PS3 issues are a common theme on this forum.  Your test results, including any resolution, will help.

Cheers,

I  tried this where I removed all other media centers frm my network and created a test folder with one file inside with a short name. The result is the same. "No Videos Found", and on my PS3 I get a DLNA error 2114!! I can see the files just fine on both my PS3 and 360 via my laptop but that defeats the whole reason I bought the 323. Can someone who has both a PS3 and 360 working with the NAS post the exact settings, frame bursts, UPnP, etc. I am also running Bitdefender 2010 and have a Linksys wrt310n wireless router

My brain's as racked over this as yours, I don't see any reason how your 360 will see other media servers on the network just not the 323's, I know there's an issue in firmware 1.07 where the refresh feature doesn't work and the only way mine seems to be able to update is to change the share directory, but with the number of times you've been changing your share folder around trying to get it to work should have more than compensated for it by now.  The only possible thing i can think of is that one of the other sharing services is somehow conflicting with the upnp, so if you have itunes server, ftp etc. enabled, try disabling them to see.  I know mine's working fine with both PS3 and 360 (other than that refresh issue that's supposedly been solved in 1.08b) If none of this works i suggest just blaming MS and saying the 360's being a jerk lol

It has to be either something on my network or the 323. Both my PS3 and 360 show the NAS but when I try and access it the 360 says "No Videos Found" and my PS3 gives me a DLNA 2114 error!

I can't even get my Xbox to see my DNS323.  Both are hardwired to my Linksys WRT610N, but nothing is visible on my Xbox.  Not the media files, or even the device.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks all for the replies so far, and it appears that there are a few other posts mixed in now with people having simililar issues.

I haven't had a chance to try everything yet, but wanted to say thanks for the posts and that I did try changing out the Linksys router that I had with another, and it didn't solve anything.   I'll get back to this in the next couple of days once the Christmas/New-Years madness is over. It's not a burning priority, but something that has me perplexed.

I am in the same both with my Xbox 360 and I have tried a series of things... With no luck. I have thought of something else and I will try it out tonight and if it works I will let you know. What gets me is my other NAS a unit by Synology works great for all my music, photos and videos so i know the 360 works. The only success I have had so far is by placing files on in the root folder (Volume 1) and the music and video files are found however anything that is not the root folder does not come up??

As mentioned I will keep you guys posted.

I had a call with a Dlink "product specialist" this morning, and after 1+ hours of trying the same things the tier1 and tier2 techs had tried before him, he finally admitted to me that while firmware 1.06 seems to work fine, firmware 1.07 is having problems with UPnP.  He said they are working on this and hope to have some new info this Thu.

What version of firmware are you running on your DNS323?  According to the Dlink "product specialist" I spoke with, v1.06 will work, v1.07 is having problems.

Hi,

Just a quick question... do you have all your avi files in one directory?

With my xbox 360 (latest firmware) ... the xbox 360 never seems to never finish listed any of my movies.

But if I put a few movies in another directory, it works fine... so my thinking is I have to sub-divide my movies into categories now?

Also... after the latest firmware upgrade for the xbox 360... avi's that were playable before are getting errors "not support format" or something like that!.... go figure! But they will play on my PS3! Seems to be random... and I don't see any easy way of filtering out which moves will play or not play since they all have the avi extensions.

Also, I'm using beta 1.08b09 for dns-323 (seagate 1.5tb drives mirrored)

Thanks, Richard
