Xbox 360 not seeing D-Link 323
« on: February 18, 2009, 01:27:30 PM »

Not sure if I missed this somewhere but I cannot get my Xbox360 to see my D-Link 323 on the network.  I have the NAS plugged into a 2wire 2700HG-E router and my xbox is set up for wireless.  It can see my tversity server running but doesn't see the NAS.

I am running FW 1.06.  I have setup the UPnP on the 323.

Is there a port I have to forward on my router for this NAS?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Both your Xbox and DNS-323 are behind the same firewall/router, right?  If so, then, no, there's no reason to open ports from one to the other.

Does your Xbox have all the latest updates. Also is your DNS-323 using the latest firmware as well? Make sure both devices are on the same IP Address range. Example: 192.168.0.xx and 192.168.0.xx.

Your answer may be in this post ...

long story short, reset to factory defaults and then enable upnp again

It seems that my gateway does not support upnp.  I wonder if this could be the problem?

I would say that the answer is that the DNS-323 DOES NOT SUPPORT XBOX360. By using this statement it would save alot of us money and time.

Sure it kind of works sometimes.

I can see the 323 on my xbox, most times.
I can videos and play them, sometimes.
I can see albums and artists but cannot play any music or see individual songs.
I can see all my pictures.

I bought the NAS specifically to stream to my 360 and it flat out does not work. D-link get your stuff together or at least let me use the USB to turn the NAS into a DAS.

I would disagree.  I used the built-in UPnP service on the DNS-323 for quite some time to stream media to the Xbox 360.  It always worked fairly well for me, but my two main issues with it were how long it took to refresh the media locations after adding a new item (about 30-35 minutes for me), and the fact it didn't like to stream MPEG-4 AVC/h.264/.mp4/.m4v video files all the time.

I also disagree, except for a few issues that were quickly resolved the upnp has been solid while working with the xbox. Maybe you are overlooking some factors in your setup that may be giving you issue?

For me, since I upgraded my DNS-323 to v1.06 and then did a reset to default and reactivated UPnP Media Server, I can stream all of my contents to 2 different XBOX360 that I have on the same network
both of the 360 are connected via Wireless.

All my Movies are in AVI (Divx/Xvid) or MPG (Mpeg1 or Mpeg2) and a couple of WMV.
All my Songs are in MP3 (VBR or CBR in bitrates from 64 to 192 kbps)
My Pictures are in .JPG  or .BMP

The only issue I found, I beleive it related to the XBOX itself and not the 323
1. Xbox360 does not like special character in filenames or paths
2. Xbox360 does not like path and file names that are too long (over 70 char total.. in my experience)

Thanks for all your tips.

What I am experiencing is that the xbox360 will not always find the DNS-323. Also I can see and play my mp4/xvid movies, can see and play my pictures, I can see the albums and the artists of my music collection but get a timeout when looking at songs.

My flies are like this:

UPNP is pointed to USERS

//USERS/username/music/artist/albumn/01 songname.mp3

all my MP3's have file names like this: "tracknumber songname.mp3", perhaps the space between tracknumber and songname is causign issues. Will try with a _.

Thanks again
