DAP-1650 Difficulties
« on: July 19, 2020, 05:59:43 AM »

Hello all.  I have had owned a DIR-890L for quite some time and have been happy with its performance.

I recently added some Ring cameras to my network, one of them being on the far corner of the attached garage to cover my driveway.  I needed to add some additional wireless coverage for this camera, and would also help my coverage and speeds around my pool.  I purchased a DAP-1650, and have it inside my garage connected to my DIR-890 via Ethernet, and setup as an AP.  The DIR-890 is in the center of my home and certainly provides the best device to connect to when in our living room, thus I have the DAP-1650 set with a different SSID and for my personal devices to only manually connect to it (such as when I’m at the pool).

Herein lies the problem.  When I am sitting at my pool, I can connect to my DIR-890 in the center of my house, but realistically I want to connect to my DAP#1650 which is less than 10’ away on the inside of the garage wall.  So I manually connect to the DAP-1650 but I constantly have WiFi speeds and connectivity issues.  Speeds lag, or are unreliable.  WiFi coverage is good, speeds and dependability are poor.

I did a few setting changes on the DAP - 1650 such as turning off the 5ghz and solely depending on the 2.4.  This didn’t seem to help.  I did use INSSIDer and it seems as though I may be overlapping with channels between my DAP-1650 and my DIR-800.  I’ve tried manually changing channels, and have rebooted both devices multiple times, however they seem to still be using the same channels and I’m thinking this may be my main issue.

Both devices are updated wit( the latest firmware.  Any help, info, or suggestions would be appreciated.  I’m employed by a major telco and am quite familiar with  networking, etc, but know just enough about WiFi and how it works to be dangerous.

Thanks in advance!

Link>Welcome!

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Be sure to use far apart channels on 2.4 and 5Ghz. So set the 890L on channel 11 and the DAP on channel 1. Same with 5Ghz. Set the 890Ls 5Ghz on higher
channels, though it has two radios so you may need to set on radio to 48 and the other to 165, while you set the DAP to either 36 or 149

What is the distance in between the 890L and DAP. 30 feet or more is recommended.

VER is 1.3
Southeast United States
My DIR-890 and DAP 1650 are probably 25’-30’ apart.

I need to check the channels and try your suggestions as I thought that might be the problem.  Thanks!
