PPPOE Connection is frequently dropped

I have just purchased and set up a new DIR-628 router, and it seems to drop the PPPOE connection every 20-60 minutes then refuse to reconnect for another minute or so. I've tried updating the firmware to 1.24NA (from 1.22NA), and have continued having the same problem. Is there a fix for this, or is my unit defective?

One test is to set the WAN port speed to 10 or 100.  AUTO speed setting seems to cause this on some unit (like mine before I "shelved" it.)
