USING THE DIR890L WITH EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE MEDIA
« on: September 04, 2015, 02:18:30 PM »

HI! Among other things promised, like losing 20 pounds and feeling better about everything, I saw several people talking about using the DIR890L with external storage, like an external drive, to play movies and music?
is that true, and if so, can someone guide me trough the process?
I am currently unboxing a Buffalo 3.TB external drive.
I'd like to put a bunch of movies on this and easily play them on my sharp smart TV.

Thanks!

FYI: Router USB HDD Max Size FAQ

How to map a USB Drive to your PC without using Shareport software
USB storage device access - DIR 820L (HOW TO) - http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58087.0
Sharport and USB Storage Configurations: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=59549.0
Storage on DIR-826L Shareport web access (RESOLVED)

I check my DIR-880L which has similar USB code as the 890L and the router would not see my 2Tb 2007 WD My Book. I connected a 250Gb drive and it saw that drive. I presume that there maybe a 1Tb limitation on DIR series router so you 3Tb may not work.

This Router is an a**
the address to access the attached drive without the SharePort feature is not stated anywhere.
and the "solution" is one that links to itself with multiple solutions for different series...

to use samba (windows file sharing) so you can transfer and delete files from the comfort of your pc.
The DLNA server, is pretty straight forward, no complaints there :)
use the address below to make the drive accessable from your pc. and not 192.168.1.x or the like.

\\dir-890l\whatever_name_the_drive_has_been_given_by_the_router

I used a loong time to figure it out since D-link is an a** and promotes it's own software SharePort or get theirs Dlink NAS' etc.

I used an old laptop drive with an enclosure to stream videos to the iPads using the Infuse app, VLC for ipad is also fine.
