Tonight is not good, my buddy let me borrow GOW3 and I want to try that out for bit since he wants it back tomorrow.  I am game for whatever even MW2 if playing with friends!  The voice over is still the best, "enemy AC-130!!!! tango sucka" :P

Hey does anyone know if there are any issues using a non MS HDD in the Xbox slim, like this one?
http://www.amazon.com/250G-Hard-Disk-Drive-Microsoft/dp/B004GX4864

I heard some people say that MS might roll out an update to check for non branded hardware on Xbox's and they will ban that console from XBL or something.

Any truth to this?

The reviews are very positive on Amazon. I have a slim, and I haven't run across any posts that M$ plans on 'locking' down the slim with their proprietary hdd's or banning.

It's actually "Tango Sakat" meaning "Tango down" but most of us thought he said "sucka".  I had to look it up!  ;)

Man, I hope they don't run an update for this.  I put one in my son's 4GB Slim.  It's been working great for over 2 months now.  Not banned yet!

There are some game that give it trouble. The one I heard about was Halo Reach Firefight. It seems to cache the map on the drive before the match, and XBL doesn't reconize the harddrive.

That Bungie link, they are talking about an external HDD, so that may be why they are having issues.

Yea, that was just one I goggled real quick as reference. Do some digging around, there are some people having issues with 3rd party internal hard drives. If you look at MS 250GB HD, there only like 230GB on it. Granted some of that is for partitioning, etc, but they also put some propitiatory software that some games require for it to work. Look at this link instead.

Just FYI, I did some digging around last year and this year for any possible solutions for putting in non standard and bigger drives then what MS policies demand. It can be done however the FW used limits the size to what MS policies demand so should you want a TB drive on your xbox, you'll be wasting it as you'll only get the limits of what MS policies demand.  >:( This is the internal HDD.

Thats part of it, but there is more to it then that I think. There is the physical limitiation, like how the board on the 360 can only do 8MB cache, so getting the higher RPM drives do nothing. On top of that, there is the size limit, I think that is set by the UI. Then there is the DRM the Xbox uses, which can keep you from media sharing and copying some files to your hard drive. Last, there is specail software on the MS HD that some games take advantage of, that isn't on a 3rd party drive (unless you clone a drive, or crack it). All of those things can not only limit you if using a 3rd party, but can raise red flags on their end. A red flag doesn't mean ban though, its more dynamic then that. They probably run sweepers, and then those logs are probably only looked at if they raise bigger flags, and even then there is probably a program they use to filter false negatives.

Bottom line? 3rd party are cheaper, but sometimes they don't work as well, and there can be some risk. For some though, they haven't had any problems. Thats the chance you take.

Well, you all scared me enough that I bought an official MS HDD on ebay to replace the one my son has.  I don't want a banned console.

I didn't really mean to scare you. Trust me, I wanted to buy to use a 3rd party more then anyone..I have like 8 of them laying around. LOL. But after all the drama with my first xbox, I didn't want to mess around.

On a interesting note, anyone know where on the board they keep the 4GB? Why doesn't the 250GB version have the extra 4GB on the board? I doabt they use a different board..maybe its just turned off?

That's a good question about the 4GB.  I dunno.  You'd think they'd leave it on to make up for some of the space they hog for whatever it is they use it for.

A few years ago, I bought a used XBOX 360 for my son.  I got a decent deal on it but come to find out it was modded and when MS did an update, it was then banned.  I sold it on ebay to someone who didn't care about XBL.  So, if there's anything that may cause his to be banned, I'll pass.  It's still under warranty.
