Post by: GreenBay42 on August 10, 2018, 10:10:07 AM
EDIT - Firmware has been pulled off until proper upgrade instructions are provided

What's the order of the installation, I did the 03_middle one first and now my router can't find the extender.  I get a power light on and the 2 down arrows are green but the up arrows are not lit.

If you connect the extender to the base via LAN cable, can you access it's UI via IP address by chance?
 ???

I had it plugged in via LAN cable and ran the setup wizard and it couldn't find the extender, I am trying a couple of different things now and will let you know.

OK, I''ve notified D-Link about this. I think they forgot to include the upgrade steps.  ::)

I hard wired it to the router after doing a couple of resets so that it would get an IP.  Went in that way and installed the b11 version.  I think the issue is that during the 03_middle is restarted the extender too soon in the process.  I don't really use the extender just wanted to update to keep it fresh.  Will play some more and let you know.

Yeah, I think the 03_middle hosed it, I was able to get the setup wizard to work when hard wired, but I still don't have the two uplink lights.  With the new b11 version, I can't go back to a lower version either.  I was NOT hardwired when I did the 03_middle upgrade, so maybe you will want to let people know that they may want to do both upgrades while wired to router.

Thanks Dave for the feedback. I will notify them to add instructions. If the middle firmware disconnects it from the router this will cause some issues.

Hopefully GreenBay can get some information. Hope the extender isn't bricked. If it is, I'm sure he can work with you to get it replaced.  ::)

Thought of something, might see if the extender has a recovery mode. Not sure if it does like the router does. Might check on this.

I can connect to it as long as its wired.  Did a factory reset on it and then ran the setup wizard but I don't thinks its retaining the settings as the password to log into the extender does not change with the wizard setup settings.

Tried to go back to the older firmware that is on support site but it won't let me downgrade.

The "middle" firmware added encryption to the firmware so you cannot downgrade. I need to ask what (or if) the emergency/crash recovery procedure is for the extender.

I can get to all the settings of the extender as long as I am wired to router,  can do firmware upgrades through upgrade page.

If I unplug the LAN cable  it is not seen on the network.

I went back and re-read the entire thread....  ::)

Have you tried using the D-Link wi-fi app to setup the extender?

I sent emails asking for instructions and crash recovery procedures for the extender. There should be a way to hard wire a computer directly to the extender and access it...hopefully.

What exactly happens when you run the wizard? Do you get errors?

What happened is that during the upgrade using the 03_middle file it restarted on its own at the 50% done instead of waiting to get to 100% and then restarting.  The upgrade window was still open during the reboot because I was watching it and the lights. The Upgrade webpage was still open and showing the completion percentage the whole time, the upgrade process  got to 100 it said process complete

That is strange that it would complete the wizard but not retain the settings. Thanks again for the info. I'm glad you are not dependent on the extender but this process should work without these issues and i agree hopefully no one else downloaded it.  :-[

To crash recover the extender:

1. Download an older firmware to your computer.
2. Connect the extender with an Ethernet cable directly to your computer. Set your computer a static IP of 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.0.
3. Hold in the reset button on the extender and unplug the power for 5 seconds and plug back in while holding the reset button down.
4. Keep holding until the LED turns red. Release. Give  a minute to boot.
5. Open IE 11 and go to http://192.168.0.50
6. The firmware recovery screen should appear. Load the firmware version you want.
7. Put your computer back to dhcp or whatever IP settings you had.
8. Press the WPS button on the extender and then the router. Wait 2 minutes.
9. Log into the router. Hopefully the extender is there? Run the wizard.

A tech is testing this now and hopefully will have the correct update instructions for the KRACK firmware.

How long should I need to hold in the reset button?  I don't get a red light just a continuous blinking yellow.  Held it for 2 minutes just blinking yellow.

A tech is testing the upgrade now. I will ask after he is done.

It usually takes like 10 seconds. As long as you were holding in the reset when the unit is off and held it as you plugged in the power, maybe it is yellow and not red.

When you crash recover, when you go to just the IP address (192.168.0.50) it is the only page that can display. If you get the regular login, it did not crash recover. The recovery page is actually in the boot loader separate from the firmware.

If you want to, you can PM a link to the newer firmware, maybe it will overwrite something on the extender and make it work.  I tried the older versions but they won't install due the new encryption.

OK. We will get this hammered out tomorrow. Not sure why it is not going into recovery mode. You are holding in the reset button as you turn the power on?  ;D

Try the latest firmware again. If you are getting to the login screen the boot loader is ok and but the settings not saving seems to be the main issue.

Yep holding the reset in as I apply power.  I have a nice metal piece that came with a DVD drive I bought years ago, does a nice job of going into small holes to press buttons.

Did firmware upgrade hard wired to laptop using FW110b11 version.  Extender rebooted itself at 65% point of the process.  NO change still getting the two green down arrow lights on the panel and no up arrow lights.  Still do not get the recovery page using reset/power on.

Here is some more information for troubleshooting.

When I hold in the reset button and plug in the power the colors on the extender are the following:

Orange for a second or two followed by 4 yellow lights that blink and then a yellow light that is solid for a few seconds and then more blinking yellow.

When I release the reset button here is what happens:

If I release on the 3rd, 4th or 5th yellow lights the light stays solid for a second and then continues on with blinking yellow, extender does not reboot.

If I release the reset on the orange or first two yellows, they stay solid for a sec and the extender reboots.  When I log into the 192.168.0.50 page I do not get the recovery page just the standard login page.

I got an email from the tech. He said he gets the login also and he replicated your issue. He uploaded both firmwares but the extender will not sync with the router. I will get more info tomorrow.

He said when holding the reset button and powered on, the light turned solid amber and he released. It blinked yellow and then turned green. He logged in and it went to the firmware page.

Don't worry about it as I have now completely hosed it. tried uploading the b11 firmware again and said "let me try something"  so I powered off part way through the upgrade.  Now I get the orange light for a few seconds, yellow light for a few seconds, five fast blinking yellow lights and then solid yellow.  Can't get back to 192.168.0.50 page.

If I hold the reset in while applying power I get 4 slow blinking yellow, a solid yellow for a few seconds and then slow blinking yellow, when I release the reset button it continues the slow blinking yellow

Tech got it working.

Try crash recovery again. He said hold in reset button (power off and then on) until it starts blinking amber and release. When he releases, the LED goes solid amber for a little bit then starts blinking amber.

Use IE 11 and go to 192.168.0.1 (not 50). This should take you to the recovery page. Downgrade to 1.01. Start it and walk away for 15 minutes. He said it took a long time but the extender eventually rebooted and got 5 green LEDs and worked.
