Slow performance copying a large number of small files
« on: January 06, 2009, 05:30:37 AM »

Hi,

the system is very slow to copy a bunch of small files (50 000 files between 1kb to 1mb)
the transfer is between 400kb/s to 1.5mb/s.
the iSCSI disk is a Raid 5 disk (spread among 10 disks)
I have 3 * 1Gbps network cards on my server connected to the DSN-3200
and the read access is the same speed.

any idea why?
what can be changed to improve this?

thanks.

Using Raid 5 has 100% data protection which in return needs more time to write. However using a lower Raid should increase performance and be fault tolerance depending what you choose. Depends if you rather have performance or protection.

(adding) there is also natural overhead to such a process.

I get the same issue across all operating systems.
