Alternative Firmware for DSN-320
« on: February 16, 2014, 02:42:20 AM »

So for all of D-links failures to actually give us a kernel update and to patch up the security flaws thats in the DSN 320 there might be some hope on the horizon with the new custom firmware being built by ALT-F

its still alpha but it is worth checking out for those that are sick and tired of the D-link firmware

Thanks for the head-up, didn't know there is an experimental firmware for DNS-320 as the ALT-F site has been around for quite sometime. Will give this a go when I have the free time.

Anyway just a caution reminder, if your NAS is still under warranty, flashing to any third-party firmware void the warranty. Also if you bricked your NAS, a serial console cable is needed for the recovery.

yepp i know that still its worth the risk since it wont be getting any updates from D-Link anymore

i hope that D-Link releases more of the sourcecode for the NAS so alternativ firmware can get better

Even if D-Link stop releasing new firmware for this NAS model, there is still FFP and Debian which will add functionality to it.

D-Link did release GPL source-code (up to 2.02) but not for those in-house developed apps.

Thats what i meant the inhouse apps would have been interesting to see how they did that still im glad that an alternative firmware has come out atleast i know you can install debian on it

quick question can the debian installation use a 3.x kernel ?

You can forget about their in-house apps as mentioned before it's not cover under GPL licensing, in short they can choose not to release the source-code.

From what I understand, if one would to load Debian via chroot method then the kernel version supported by Debian must match the NAS firmware. But if it done via u-boot then there would not be a problem.

I've been happily using alt-f on my DNS-320 for about three weeks now. Wrote my findings here:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51588.msg229791#msg229791

Based on my actual experiences: integrated miniDLNA client is good as so is transmissionBT client.
And, apart form Dlink's firmware, there is no performance hit, when you let bt client service started (no down/uploading of course)  ;)
