Title: DNS-343 Cannot Map Network Drive
Post by: glennicus on September 14, 2010, 03:18:29 PM

I've just moved and am setting up my home network again.  I am unable to map the network drive for my DNS-343 on either of my two PCs (Vista) even after about one hundred tries.  At the same time, I had no difficulty mapping the drive for my DNS-321.  Is there any way to work around the Easy Search Utility?

Are you mapping directly to the volume?  e.g. \\192.168.1.4\Volume_1

Yes.  Using the Easy Search Utility, I select the DNS-343 and then select Volume 1.

I should add that when I log into my router (D-Link DIR-655), I can see the DNS-343.  I can also access it as a network location via Windows Explorer.  I just can't map the network drive so that I can assign it a drive on my computer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Setting the Easy Search Utility aside for a minute. . . .Did you try mapping the network drive directly in Windows using \\[IPADDRESS]\[Volume_Name] using "Map Network Drive" in "My Computer"?

If you can access it via explorer, I can't think of any technical reason why entering the \\IP\Volume wouldn't save.

JavaLawyer, I have tried that, but without success.  I'm at a total loss.  I appreciate the help.

Just to be clear, you are able to access the DNS-343 directories and content via Windows Explorer on the same PC that can't save the location as a mapped drive?

That is correct.

I'm at a loss.

Since the address works in Windows Explorer, unless incorrect data is manually entered into the "Map Network Drive" in My Computer, the mapping should work.

Other than these three suggestions below, I can't think of anything else to troubleshoot:

(1) Make sure you have the correct IP address
(2) Make sure the NAS volume name is correct
(3) Make sure you're entering the syntax \\ip_address\volume_name

I updated my driver and now the DNS-343 appears under My Computer, but without a drive associated to it.  If I double-click on that icon, I can access all of my data with great ease, but still cannot map the network drive either manually or through the search utility.  However, when I try to do it manually, I am now prompted to enter a username and password but it will not accept my admin login.

I do appreciate your help.

Looks like you're almost there.  You may want to try creating a user/group in the DNS-343 configuration and try adding those credentials when you're prompted for a user name / password when mapping manually.  Make sure the new user account has access to the root of the volume or directory you're mapping to.

I'm afraid that didn't work.  At this point, I can access all of the data on the NAS, just not the way I want to, and some of the programs I like to use with that data can't reach the data, but it is, at this point, functional enough.  Thank you for all of your help, JavaLawyer.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Perhaps another user can chime in with some ideas.
