extreme packet loss after two days running
« on: January 03, 2021, 09:43:48 AM »

I don't like to even think that my COVR 3902 is failing, but I'm having to reboot it now every two days, because the network gets into a state with extreme packet loss where devices are failing to load webpages when requested. I already have the router set to reboot once a week, but lately that hasn't been good enough. I have an average of 36 devices active on the network at any given time. My modem status page is not really showing errors. I ran some ping tests and an hour after rebooting the modem and router showed high ping loss at hop 1. According to what I read, this appears to be a router problem. Cables have been recently changed out for new. The router and the AP are both current on FW. Hardware Version: A1   Firmware Version: 1.01 for the base and the AP. So my question is, does this sound like the router is failing? And since DLink has sunsetted the COVR3902, what options do I have? I love the COVR3902 setup, the current mesh systems do not have enough ethernet ports to satisfy my setup. I already have an 8 port switch on my network. Having single ethernets on satellite access points just won't work for our household. I have already wired all the needed ethernet lines in to the home office, and I cannot move the move from there. I can't see where locating all of the satellites in the same room would be productive, and that's what I would have to do to have barely enough ethernet connections.

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

What is the mfr and model is this switch?

What is the distance between the router and extender unit? In feet. 30 feet distance is recommended to begin with.

What kinds of devices do you have on the network?

As I recall the firmware update was applied when I received the unit, before setting up my network. There has only been 1 firmware update for this system.
What is the mfr and model is this switch?
The switch is D-Link DGS-2208
What is the distance between the router and extender unit? In feet. 30 feet distance is recommended to begin with.
My best estimate is 26 feet. The router is on the first floor and the extender is on the second floor.
What kinds of devices do you have on the network?
3 Smart TV's, 3 Fire TV boxes, 3 Windows laptops, 3 Fire tablets, 2 Echo Dots, 4 Wyze cameras, 1 oil tank gauge, 1 A/C sensor, 2 Android phones, smart plugs, smart bulbs

I'm aware that free support expired 2 days ago, but I would really rather keep it running if I can. It was running flawlessly, and I don't see anything even from other vendors, that will be similar enough and under $500. I'm at a loss as to what is wrong, and I cannot get support from my ISP with any reliability.

Be sure to review these two versions:

I would remove the switch from the network and turn OFF all devices accept for 1 wired PC after doing a reset and setup from scratch. Chech for packet loss. Use Pingplotter.coms free software to test the ISP modem first with a wired PC, Then test from the wired PC to the router while ALL other devices are turned OFF. Then add the extender and test again from the router and from behind the extender.

OK, thank you. Can't do it now, weekend is over. And I'm WFH, with a retired hubby, so it will take me some time. With a little luck, it will all hold long enough til I can get back to it.

Yes, thanks for following up. There was nothing wrong with the switch, but the factory reset on the router did the trick.

On an unrelated issue, I discovered that even though you can't isolate 2.4 for IOT devices, you can isolate it on Guest.  I had trouble getting a new device on the network because of the options the router does t give you. I turned on Guest on 2.4 and devices work fine that way. The only thing they can't do is router administration , which of course you wouldn't want them to.

Good to hear.

Ya, you can't separate SSIDs on COVR systems.

Enjoy.  ;)
