FORUM USER REQUESTS and BUGS
« on: February 17, 2012, 08:13:11 AM »

This thread is in regards to what users of the DIR-857 would like to request DLink to review and consider adding features to the routers FW and operation. Also this thread includes any reports of bugs that arere-producible, that should be reviewed by DLink seen my us users. Please be detailed, concise and tactful when posting the requests and bug details.

Do not arbitrarily post defects or bugs here. Before reporting concerns about defects or bugs, please ensure that troubleshooting of the problem has been thoroughly completed before posting a problem about defects. Not all issues are a defect or bug related. Let other users help you troubleshoot the problem first before posting here.

Demanding anything will not get us anything. There are no guarantees.

Please keep other subjects, topics and questions to other threads and posts. This thread is just a central list of Features and Bugs for review by DLink.

If you like, you can PM me your list and details and I will had them to a list I've started here.  ;)

FEATURE REQUESTS:
Example: 1. Add router web page timeout options. (Would help to disable this when working with users in making operations in a slow manor or for those who like to keep the routers page open there browsers for a long period of time.)

DEFECTS:
Example: 1. At 24 MAC entries it said "You cannot add more rules because the table is full. " Need to find out if this is a defect if other rules are not set up in the pool or if there is an actual limitation on setting up the amount of MAC entries you can have.

1. I would really like a status page that shows all the port forwarding that has been setup by UPNP as well as any other potential nasties that UPNP has set in the router.  This is important for proper security.

2. I would also like a status page that shows all of the devices discovered on the LAN, not just the ones discovered by DHCP.  When a device has a static IP assigned, it is not visibile on any status page unless its a wireless device.  Hidden devices are a security risk...

This is one enhancement that I would really like to see for all home routers:

Local LAN Dynamic DNS
=================

Prerequisites:
1. DHCP is enabled
2. Some DHCP reservations have been setup
3. DNS Relay is enabled
4. Local Domain Name (ie: really local domain name suffix) is setup

Then:
1. Allow a setting for "Local LAN Dynamic DNS" to be enabled

What it does:
1. Takes the host name of the DHCP reservation plus a "." plus the Local Domain Name (suffix)
and offers that combination as a valid DNS address using the DNS Relay.  The resulting
IP address would be from the corresponding entry in the DHCP Reservation Table.

The benefits:
1. Allows any device setup using the DHCP reservation to be addressed by its host name
rather than having to remember it's IP address.
2. Eliminates having to put entries in the local "hosts" tables to do the IP resolution.

Example:
I currently use a Local Domain Name suffix of "ici" (which means "here" in French).  The "ici" is passed down to my Windows boxes via the DHCP service.  Windows can automatically append this suffix to a URL.  I currently have hosts file entries for most of the equipment on my LAN.  eg: The "hosts" file entry for my DLiink DNS-323 NAS would be would be "blitzen.ici  192.168.81.104"  and I have a DHCP reservation setup to make sure this address is associated with "Blitzen", my DNS-323.   Now when I browse "Blitzen.ici", I get to look at all the available shares.  There are similar benefits for printers, bridges, scanners, etc.   If the DNS Relay could resolve the local LAN IP addresses, I would not have to maintain the local "hosts" file on all my computers and worry about keeping them in sync.

Now wouldn't that be a great feature!

QoS is being reported as disabled on ISP Uplink Speeds over 2Mb. Dlink, Please review and consider QoS and the impact of uplink speeds over 2Mb and the interaction between the two to allow higher ISP up links speeds to work with QoS on router products.

Please review the following DIR-827 for additional information:

DIR-857 gets garbage in its log and unstable Xbox Live connections after some time if reserved I.P.'s are not used for Xbox Live.  Connections are stable so far (5+ days) with reserved I.P.'s (using UPnP to support 2 Xboxes).  Possibly related to crowded Wifi environment.

3TB NAS support!  Specifically 3TB WD My Book Essentials.  The DIR 857 would be unbeatable if you had this.  You are way ahead of Cisco, keep moving foreward!

Thanks!

Sorry, not NAS.  USB 3.0 drives larger than 500GB.  Specifically the WD My Book Essentials 3TB!

As per previous posts,

  • sure would love to have a configurable Admin Idle Timeout
  • would be nice to have an additional Network (MAC) Filtering feature to Allow all wired AND Deny/Allow list of WiFi clients

Cheers,

[BUG] 6in4 doesn't work with fimware 1.01
« Reply #9 on: June 07, 2012, 07:28:03 AM »

Hello,

I tried to upgrade the firmware to 1.01. It went successfully, but my 6in4 tunnel to Hurricane Electric stopped working. The status page says "connected" but there is no LAN IPv6 address and clients aren't assigned IPv6 addresses. I tried to do factory reset and configure from scratch but to no avail.

The setting are correct as the they do work just fine with firmware 1.00 right now, after I downgraded back. Firmware 1.01 just ignores the value for the LAN address in the 6in4 configuration. This value is crucial for 6in4, as there is no automatic way to get the LAN address, it has to be manually configured.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Fixed in firmware 1.02. Thanks!

Seems that performing a factory reset, loading FW update then another factory reset and then trying to load a saved Configuration file fails in error.

Please allow port forward profiles to have overlapping ports defined.  Port forward doesn't allow the same ports to be used on different profiles.  Never had this happen with previous routers.

Hi, I've been using my DIR-857 for a couple of weeks now and have spotted a couple of points worth noting:

1) uPnP responses leaking across the WAN interface.  There's no way of easily blocking ports 1900/UDP and 2869/TCP across the WAN interface - only solution is to disable uPnP right?  If you enable uPnP and use the test here: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2 , it fails

2) Firewall: Can't easily block or allow ports across a range of IP addresses -  e.g. block incoming ports 1900/UDP and 2869/TCP to IP addresses 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.199.  We have to assign forwarding rules per host and this is very clunky.

May add some more requests as I use the device more :)

thanks,

NB

Verified with any other sites that this is happening? Heard that GRC doesn't provide accurate results sometimes.

Hi,

Yes, confirmed: Rapid 7 test gives the following result

GRC results show this outcome:

Seems like it's a problem.  Could be this was fixed in firmware updates, but we are still using 1.01 in Europe - the update / support isn't so good!  Could you possibly check?

Cheers,
