SmartTV sony: access on USB by DLNA. Which Router? (RESOLVED)
« on: February 03, 2014, 08:25:09 AM »

Hi,
I have a SmartTV Sony (KDL-46EX653) and an USB HD drive.

I would buy the best D-LINK router in order to play video stored in HD directly from the TV.

The connections should be like this:
SmartTV <--> router <--> USB HD

(no PC/laptop must be involved)

Which d-link router can do it?

Thanks,
 Massimo

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

If the TV has Wifi or LAN networking abilities, any DIR series router with Media Server features should work well for you, Amplify DIR series or 8 series Cloud routers will have media server features.

I recommend that you phone contact D-Link sales and ask them specifically which one would be best and meet your needs.

Be aware that the max recommended USB HDD drive size is 500Gb formatted NTFS.

Let us know what you end up getting.

HI,
an thanks for you quick reply.

The TV has LAN wired connection.

I'm in Italy. The d-link guys suggested me DIR-826L or DIR-645.

What confuse me is that DIR-826L cited DNLA in its tech specifics but this guy has some trouble with this router:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51962.0

Moreover, in DIR-645 tech stuff is mentioned "move" video files and not play it directly on the TV.

So I'm not sure which one is the best or if there is something that will work for sure.

Any idea?

Thanks,
      Massimo

Ya we've seen issues with TVs and these routers, mostly due to TVs not supporting certain connection, file formats or problems with the TVs hardware.

I don't have a TV that uses DNLA, I have boxee box and a Hopper. The hopper connects to the USB drives however is particular on what file formats it can place. While the boxxe box, not so much and can play many files thru that.

One thing you can do, connect your USB drive to a PC and share it out fully. Do some testing with the TV and see how it works for you. Then go for a router.

I would contact D-Link support back and verify that those models will work for your needs. Maybe find a local shop with a refund policy available so you can try a router out. If it doesn't work for you, then take it back.

I call back the d-link support and the guy told me to chose between those two:
DIR-645
and
DIR-657

My main issue is to play video on USB HD driver in the TV directly (without PCs/laptops...)

Any suggestion?

It go with the 645...it's got a better WiFi configuration and should work well for you. Just be aware that any USB drives connected should be formatted NTFS and official max. size is 500Gb.
