[SOLVED]Samsung Ecogreen F2 154ui 1,5 GB doesn't work.
« on: August 31, 2009, 06:48:02 PM »

Hi,
I bought a DNS-323 with a Samsung Ecogreen F2 154ui (1,5GB), but when I start up the NAS, I get a request to format, and then hangs on 94%.
I have latest firmware 1.07, and I have formatted the drive with Ubuntu to Ext2, but no difference.

Something else I can try?

Thnx!

I just put two of those drives (HD154UI/Y) in mine and they formated just fine.  My problem is that I cannot, whatever I do, get them to work in RAID 1 mode.  In the process of trying to get that to work, I ended up formatting the drives at least 5 times.  Big waste of time.  Whenever the format finishes I end up with two independent drives, even though I did select RAID 1.  So, I figured I'd just do a nightly FTP backup (firmware 1.08 beta) from important folders on volume_1 to volume_2.  Problem is only the first letter of each folder in volume_1 was copied to volume_2.  And no files moved over.  So, I have a directory on volume_2 that looks like:
A
B
C
F
H
J
Q
Y
Z
What a load of garbage.  I really like the idea of this NAS, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

I have a pair of those drivers in mine, they formatted and worked fine with Firmware 1.07 installed.  I have the 1.08 beta 5 installed now, and they still work fine in RAID-1 mode.

So, maybe interesting to note that I'm trying to install just 1 harddrive. So the only option I have is to install the drive as "separate disks". And that doesn't work for some reason.
Later I tried "low level formatting" that specific harddrive, with Samsung's diagnostic-tools, and ended op with surface-error's.
This is the 2nd Samsung Ecogreen F2 154ui that got corrupted in 1 week time, same situation (installing 1 HD in DNS-323): Can it be that DNS-323 is capable of messing up these harddrives?
1st HD: DNS-323 freezes at 94% formatting > Checking in windows > Smart errors
2nd HD: DNS-323 freezes at 94% formatting > Checking in windows > no smart errors > Manually formatting to ext2 with Ubuntu 9.04 > Harddisk "disappears" > reboot, HD available again > Manually formatting to ext2 with Ubuntu > Harddisk "Disappears" again > Downloading Smasing's Diagnostic tools > Fails diagnostics with "Surface errors" > trying low-level format, as suggested > Low-level format fails.

I'm exchanging this harddrive for the 3rd time now.
FIRST! I'm going to check it with Samsung's diagnostic tools, THEN (just in case) apply low-level format.
THEN I'll format it to ext2 under Ubuntu. THEN I'll put it in DNS-323.
If things STILL go wrong, chances are very probable that it's the NAS is breaking my harddrives.

Well, I formatted then first on Windows and got no errors with a surface scan.  Then I stuck them in the DNS-323 and let it format them.  I'm now using them and so far they've worked fine.  The format also went without issue.  I am running them in a RAID-1 configuration, since the purpose of upgrading from my 500's was to get some hardware redundancy and not lose capacity.  I ran those as RAID-0, which was not as safe. :)

Well, here we are again.
New Samsung Ecogreen F2 154ui.
1) Checked the new harddrive with Samsung's tools > no errors
2) applied low-level format (waste of time...) with Samsung's tools > no errors.
3) started Ubuntu 9.04, formatted the whole harddrive with ext2 > no problems. (NOTE: Since it was a new device, I set the partition-table to ms-dos)
4) I've put it in my DNS-323 > Hangs on 94% WTF!!!!!!

I'm updating firmware 1.08 Beta, I'll see if that helps.

For the record, I have only ONE harddrive in my DNS-323...  I wonder if that's part of triggering this bug.

Maybe the one drive is the issue, I've never run mine with one drive.  I have yanked one drive out to see if the RAID would rebuild properly when I first set it up, and it functioned with the one drive and I was able to rebuild the RAID after sticking the other drive in.

ok...
I just updated my DNS-323 with 1.08Beta, rebooted, and voila...
Just like noting happened, it started up with my Samsung Ecogreen F2 154ui.

Even though the last ding it did to the harddrive, is format it to 94%.

Under disktools there's an option to do a health test, running it now.
When that's completed, I'll format it once agan, just to be sure, because it doesn't give me a secure feeling knowing the previous format ended at 94%.

I'll keep you posted.

There has been posts that the drive scan doesn't work, so I'd be careful with that one.  :o  ;D

well.. whatever it did:
Volume Name      Scan Disk Result
Volume_1     SUCCESS

I'm going to format it now anyway.

I'm still confused whether to laugh or cry.

From Beta forum list of fixed issues:

23. Fix Disk formatting counter imprecise and always hanged at 94% issue.

Ah. Something else: After updating to firmware 1.08, I applied default settings & restarted.
To my surprise I was able to choose Ext3 again!!
So, that's what I chose. Formatted just fine.

I'm happy.
I just hope it's stable...

So, I guess 1.08 Beta was the answer to my problems.
Though 2 broken drives in 1 week makes me worried.

We'll see. I'm happy for now.
2x 1500 GIG, quite, slightly warm to the touch.. a lot better that the previous drives.

I do find the Samsung drives are a lot cooler than the pair of 1.5TB Seagate drives in my DNS-321. :)

Glad it got worked out.
