Disconnecting with DAP-1360
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:46:09 PM »

Hi Everyone, first post since joining the Forum. I'm located in Sydney, Australia.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and using IE11 browser.

Only just purchased the DAP-1360 last week to use as a AP with my Wireless Home Gateway modem/router. I've had this Gateway for over 3 years, and it appears the WiFi signal has lost some of its strength as I was now getting disconnections over the past month. I had no problems prior with disconnections.

I setup the DAP-1360 up using the Wireless Setup Wizard, and it all works well until it decides to disconnect. This disconnecting can occur every 30 mins or 6 hours without any warning, especially during downloading. All I need to do to resolve the problem, is power down/up the DAP-1360 and I'm back in business. The DAP-1360 has H/W C1 and F/W Version 3.02 installed when purchased and what appears on bottom of deviced.

As I'm in Australia, I have reported the problem to the Australian Tech Support via email. The Australian Tech Support website is not very helpful, as their F/W & H/W download is for the previous version to what I have. I have explained the problem and have also asked if I am able to upgrade to the new version 3.04, as this apparently is Region orientated (reading on forum).

I'm still waiting on a reply to my email, but just wanted to post and explain where I am at with my own problem.

Link>Welcome!

How far away is the DAP from the main host router?
What Mfr and model router do you have?

Main Host Router Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default.
  • Enable WMM Enable.

I think you can use v3.04 from this site:

Thanks for the Welcome.

The Wireless Modem/Router used by ISP-VividWireless is Greenpacket DX 4G modem (http://www.greenpacket.com/devices/dx-wimax-indoor-cpe.html)

I have tried the different 802.11 single modes, which did not help, especially N- left with no signal.  Mode set at Mixed N,G, B.

I tried the single channels, but signal deterioated further. Signal now set Auto Channel Scan.

Did not change Channel Width, left at Auto 20/40MHZ.

Security Mode set to WPA-Personal.

Have WPA Mode set to WPA2 only.

Cipher Type: set TKIP and AES.

I tried turning Off and On Short GI. disconnections seemed more frequent with Short Gi off. Have left this set to ON.

No cordless phones, microwaves or similar products that use that type or range of frequency.

I use inSSIDer all the time. I have 3 other wireless networks around me (neighbours) with one of those channels overlapping.

The DAP-1360 is positioned 8" from modem/router. This is the only position within the house where I receive the best signal from tower. Also, changed ethernet cable to a CAT 6 type, as I did not know what type came with the device.

Whilst posting, just received email from Australian Tech Support and all they provided was a link to the version 3.04 update. I have already downloaded the update, but not installed on device.

Can I utilise the Firmware Update feature within the device to do the firmware update?

Have you shut off the WiFi on the ISP Modem as a test and then run the DAP-1360 alone?

Try to use a channel on the DAP thats not being use by one of your neighbors, 1, 6 or 11 is preferred or what ever channel is farthest away from the closest neighbor.

If you do update FW, please follow this:
FW Update Process
Yes, use the FW update section of the DAP to update FW.

Yes, the WiFi on the Modem is turned off.

I already tried those Channels, and the signal deterioated.

Since changing the Ethernet cable 15 hrs ago, I have had no disconnections - coincidence!

Just on a week since replacing the Ethernet cable, and I have been getting disconnections up to 3 times a day. Sometimes, the  connection will be re-established, but most times I need to power the router off/on.

I have now upgraded the Firmware to 3.04, so I will monitor and see what happens with disconnections.

In the meantime I have ordered an omnidirectional antenna - D-Link ANT24-0700 2.4GHhz 7dBi Gain Omni-Directional Universal Antenna, and will install in case of no improvement.

Is this acting as the main AP or are you using it as a repeater?

I recommend checking to make sure that the channel being used doesn't have any over lapping WiFi routers on it thats near by.

Test the DAP with out any other WiFi enabled on the main modem/router. Turn that OFF.

ozcaddy, good. firmware v3.04 should do the trick. Getting a better antenna is a good thing, you do not want to have to weak signal as this could drop the line etc. Also important to place the WLAN on a empty channel or where it is least crowded if possible.

@FurryNutz,

it is being used as an AP only.

I've  tried it with the Modem WiFi turned off - no difference.

The Channel it is operating on is overlapped by one other. Have tried other Channels manually, but get a weak signal. So have Auto Channel ON.

I upgraded to 3.04 since last post, and have had no disconnections - seems to have resolved the problem.

@DennisOlof1 - Since upgrading to 3.04, no disconnections have occurred. Haven't received the antenna yet. Thanks for your comments.

ozcaddy, ok, if there is only one other WLAN that you can see you do not have to worry about interference. This is mostly a problem if you have like five or more WLANs in the same channel.

And it is better to set channel manual, not using auto, reason why is that the 2.4Ghz band only has ch1, ch6 and ch11 (they do not overlap). Check wikipedia for more info if you need to.

So 2.4Gh is great, works for all hardware, not to speedy but works. For uplinks, or point to point things, 5Ghz band should be used, more speed, a lot less interference. However if you are in a area with there are few WLANs etc. Out in the countryside or something 2.4Ghz can be use for p2p, uplink too, no problem.

Good that you upgraded to 3.04, it is a must, you should have no problems with drops, or disconnect now.

Since upgrading to 3.04, I've had no disconnections or dropouts, signal has been strong with 4-5 bars on computers WiFi. On inSSIDer, the signal reading sits between 60-68.

The new antenna arrived and I connected straight onto the DAP-1360. There was no improvement on signal to what I not mentioned above, so I have left it off for now. I don't have a position for it with the 1.5mt cable included, so have not tried that option .

DennisOlof1 - I have tried the Channels manually with the DAP-1360 and new Antenna, but the strength of the signal just drops away to 1-2 bars on the computer. It's not what I would have expected. The Auto channel select works fine and always stays on Channel 1 (1 overlapping channel).

The other noticeble thing when the upgrade was done, was increase in speed to what I was acheiving before upgrade. I know that there is a drop in speed when an external AP/extender is connected.

But I'm totally very happy with the way things are at present. The Upgrade to 3.04 should be the first thing suggested when someone has a problem with their connection.

PS: Sorry for interuption to Super Bowl - a bit one sided ;D

ozcaddy, yes that is what everyone using DAP-1360 needs to do.

I wrote else where in here about the issues, the v3.02 firmware had major issues, it was something to do with loading and unloading the realtek driver for the WLAN chip in the unit that was wrong, so the units would totally crash random (or lock up is more like it) so the WLAN became useless and a reboot was needed.

All these major errors where fixed in v3.04 and any issues left are probably small and nothing to care about.

Good it worked out for you.
