Not able to get IP on WAN port
« on: September 25, 2013, 10:33:05 AM »

I have bought 2 DIR-860L to keep in each end of my house. Was looking forward to easily Control internet usage for my son through the D-link cloud app.

Unfortunately I have not been able to use it yet, because I am not able to get a IP, if it is connected to my HP Procurve switched wired LAN. Router will work just fine if only using Wireless, but when I Connect the LAN to one of the LAN ports, I drops instantly on the WAN port, and is not able to allocate an IP on the WAN port. Status is cable connected, and network disconnected. I have an fiber Connection, With Ethernet DHCP.

The same thing happens when i try to troubleshoot it connecting it to my old Linksys router, and when connecting it to the network at my office. Have tried all versions of available hardware from the US site.

I work as a IT consultant, and have configured enterprise WLAN solutions, and multiple brands of routers for both home and business, but never meet this problem. If it had been one, I would have returned it to the shop instantly, but now I got two with the excact same problem. Have posted a case at D-Link support 4 days ago with no answer yet, except an Reference.

Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Are you using the 860Ls in wired AP mode? What Mfr and model is the main host router?

Review this:
Turning a router into an AP.

In wired AP mode, the WAN port can not be used.

Hi, thanks for a quick reply.

HW Version is A1, and Firmware
Firmware is 1.04, been through 1.00, 1.02,1.03.
Located in Norway

I am using a fiber-optics ISP (SFJBB/Altibox), with Ethernet (DHCP - no modem, just a converter/patch panel)
ISP speed is 100/100 Mbit/s

Will use the 860L, as main router, and would like to link the other wired as another router (not as an extender), but with full functionality as the first one In the other end of the house. I have not yet been able to try this, as I have not been able to make first one work. I have a drawing, but not sure how to upload it here.

Please use sites like photobucket or imageshack to upload your picture files, then copy and paste the IMG url link here into the forums then your pictures and drawing will be displayed.

Please review the Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP) information. Towards the end of that information is another link to making a router into a extended router.
Just be aware that you will have to NAT systems on line and some routing or access can be problematic and it's not preferred to use this method.

You might consider using the 2nd 860L as a wired AP instead.

Let us know how it goes...

My main problem is no the dual access point, but that I don't get an IP on the WAN port when I connect a switch to one of the LAN ports on the DIR-860L.

Finally a breakthrough ;D

Concluded that the D-Link DIR-860L will not work if I connect it to a HP procurve 1800 24G (or 8G) switch. It is most probably not that it's a HP Procurve switch, but more likely because it is managed. I have no managed switches from other vendors available, but is pretty sure we can conclude that the D-Link DIR-860L will not work if a managed switch is connected to one of the WAN ports.

I have today tested with a simle unmanaged lowend 10/100/1000 8 port switch, which I put between the D-Link860L and the HP Procurve 1800 24G switch. Now everything works like it should.

AH, good find. I have a HP ProCurve switch as well however it's unmanaged I believe. I'd have to take a look at the details. IT works with all my routers I test.

You might ask HP if there is a specific setting on the switch to enable better compatibility.

We'd be interested to know what you find out.

Does the 2nd scenario work for you in the picture? It should.

Yes, second scenario works now. Not sure why it did not on the first 5 tries?  ??? To be more specific, it's not correct to say managed switch, but VLAN enabled or a layer 2 switch if you like.

Not to many options, but here they are.
- System - IP / admin credentials
- Port config - Speed/Duplex, Flow Control enable/disable,Mirror enabling also available
- Trunks - LACP enable/disable, key value
- VLAN port config - VLAN aware enable/disable, Ingress Filtering Enable/disable, packet type all/tagged Only, PVID
- LLDP enable/disable on all ports
- SNMP

Not giving up on this, so will find a syslog server, and see if I can get some relevant info from the router.
