Failed Drive
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:10:43 AM »

I am having trouble this morning with my DNS-323 NAS device (Firmware 1.04).

I couldn't connect to it this morning.  Both drive LED's were blue indicating the drives were okay.

I powered down the NAS (front push button) and after power up the right drive LED is orange to indicate a failed drive.

I've had the device for only a few weeks.

The installed drives are Western Digital WD2500YS drives which are high performance network drives.

Having never experienced such a premature hard drive failure, this failure after only a few weeks leaves me very suspect.

How common is this?  How can I be certain that the NAS device has not caused the failure?  Is there any diagnostics that I can perform on the NAS or drive to understand the cause of failure?

I read in another thread that false drive failures have been experience with firmware 1.04.

Is this valid?  How can this be qualified.

I check the NAS again (about 15 min. later).... the orange light is now blue.

So - is the drive failed or isn't it?

This seems pretty flaky.

If you are running a RAID 1 (mirror); perhaps, the orange light signified
the RAID was re-syncing, and turned blue once the drives were in sync?
