DIR-655 and Moderate NAT on Xbox Live
« on: July 14, 2011, 10:25:11 AM »

Hi all,

Hoping to find some help here as I've done several searches on this but all seem to give pretty much the same information on the issue and I'm practically tearing my hair out trying to get this to work.

Purchased a DIR-655 router a few months back after my old Linksys one decided to stop working and I hadn't really messed around hooking it up to my Xbox 360 until just a few days ago. Things worked fine on my end, or so I thought, until last night when a few friends and I tried to get a party going. I would get an invite, try to join and get the: "Cannot Connect To Xbox Live Party" error repeatedly, and they vice-versa when I tried to invite. Tried to join a game on Dead Space 2, would get an error two or three times and then finally get in, the same on Left 4 Dead 2. I started to get very annoyed by it until I remembered I hadn't set up my router for XBL. Just to check I ran on connection test and came up with a NAT of moderate. No problem I thought, so I go in, open all the ports and to make sure there would be no issues I set the static IP for the Xbox 360 into the DMZ and double checked to make sure UPnP was enabled. Saved the settings, refreshed the router, my connection, and the restarted the Xbox. I go into the network configuration on the Xbox and test the connection, and sure enough, it pops up with a NAT of moderate again. I try to join/create a party, same error message and problems as before. I hop out and double check the settings, everything appears to be set up properly. I ran through the steps a few more times and stayed on long after everybody else had already gone to bed trying and retrying the steps, all to no avail. I even turned TCP/UDP Endpoint Filtering to Endpoint Dependent and tried with SPI on and off, all with the same results. I exhausted all the options I can think of trying to get this to work and I'm really wishing I would have hooked my Xbox up to my router the day I bought it so I would have known about this before I wasted half their night waiting on me.

I'm pretty much stumped at this point, dumping it into the DMZ should have fixed the issue in and of itself but for whatever reason it hasn't and I've tried everything I can think of. Anybody with this router having this problems or any ideas as to what else I might be able to do or anything I might be doing wrong? If it makes any difference, the hardware version is B1 and the firmware version is 2.00NA, I don't think it does but I ran across another post with someone claiming there to be an issue with UPnP on the 1.3xx firmware version.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Check out the gaming and gamefuel stick in the DGL-4500 forum.
Will help you get to OPEN NAT.

The hardware version is B1 and the firmware version is 2.00NA.

It's Bellsouth DSL, a Westell F90 modem, no built in router that I can see.

Can check to see possibly, check the status/device info/wan section and if your seeing a 192.168.#.# for the WAN ip then the DSL modem is probably got a router in it. This will effect how the router works and connect to XBL. It's preferred to bridge these DSL modems if they have a built in router.

Also review this for XBL and set up: Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL.
