Not quite sure what you are asking about here.

What size and brand of disks are you using?  I assume they are 1TB drives from the Volume Information you give.  The other panels are from where?

One thing I can quote is a reply given on a totally different forum about the new 8TB helium filled drive.

Re: Is it really 8TB?

I suspect it is 8TB unformatted as drive manufacturers report sizes, ie 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes as opposed to 1099511627776 bytes that you might be expecting.

In addition to to the TB/TiB difference you will also have the usual loss of capacity due to formatting.

(yes, it annoys me too even though 1TB being 10004 is mathematically (decimal) correct, being an old fogey the binary 10244 is what would seem more logical)

my bad. DNS-320,  2 discs of 1 TB in raid 1.
1 space used by files and folders (mounted)
2 space used in recycle bin (mounted)
3 in my computer
4 in web interface
All showing the same so there is no mistake. I know that some space is reserved during formatting but 200 GB ?

Out of curiosity I setup one of our DNS-320 boxes wit a couple of Samsung 1TB drives and formatted them as RAID 1.

For that I got: Total "Volume_1" Space = 981351 MBytes, which, if my maths is correct shows a 'missing' 18,649 MBytes and that compares very well with the same drives formatted as JFS on our IBM OS/2 workstations (if we use HPFS formatting we get a little more overhead used because we need a couple of partitions on that size disk).

There are several things that can cause 'strange' formatting capacities with most of them being down to windows monopoly position in the consumer market and how manufactures of computer parts react in the consumer market.  By that I mean, in the case of disk drives, the firmware is set to assume that formatting will be windows NTFS or, as a worst case FAT32.  The moment any other format is used strange capacities can be, and usually are, reported.  This is not the case with enterprise drives for the simple reason that Linux has the larger share in that market.

Interesting!  Since you have a RAID 1 array there is the possibility that one of the disks has had a problem and marked that area of the disk as unusable which causes the array to show what you are seeing but that is only a stab in the dark.

There isn't anything I can really advise you to do.

I know what we would do if someone brought a unit with that type of problem to us but it is not something that anyone without the technical knowledge, tools and experience should undertake.

i checked another one, 320L with 2 TB discs  in raid 1, and it have 30 GB of unknown space.  Total/used/unused 1800/400/1400.

Would the unknown space be D-Link DNS FW and OS stuff? Just an idea...

I very much doubt that it would be firmware or support programs.  Firmware tops out at about 36 MB and support programs add another 50 odd MB.

A point my service manager brought up.  Is this unit accessible from the internet and if so are there ant logs showing internet access to it?  The thought is that is it is accessible by the world plus dog then someone could quite easily be using it to serve something (****, kiddy pictures etc.) from a hidden directory.

Copy all data you don't want to lose to an external disk (note the amount of space taken up) and then shut down the unit. Download the disk manufacturers disk tools and use them to check each disk (full SMART test, bad sector scan etc.) and then use them to clear the partition tables (reset to factory conditions).

Once you have clean disks, reinsert them into the unit, reformat as RAID 1 (note capacity etc.), copy back your data and again check the used capacity (it should be the same as or very close to the amount of space taken up on the external disk - the very small difference is caused by how different formats deal with small files).

If this gives you back the 200 GB then you need to monitor or block external access to the unit.
