Some tips in conf to boost wifi
« on: September 19, 2015, 12:49:14 PM »

Hi!

The router is in a central room  of the apartment (less than 90mē, ie it is not big). One of the rooms - which is a short distance from the router, with 3 wall from distance - suffers from a weak signal. I can hardly watch one video at 480p on Youtube sometimes. And the contracted speed is 20mb.

In this room, my laptop, iPad, Moto X connect to a wifi with low signal. At least the iPad can sometimes see the 5Ghz network.

What can I do to improve the signal by changing the settings? Without having to resort to answers like buying a repeater  :-\, since I bought this router thinking it would not suffer this problem anymore (my previous router was a Linksys E2500).  DD-WRT firmwire can at least increase the Tx Power.

Model: DIR-850L A1
Firmware: 1.12WW Fri 26 Sep 2014
Wireless card: Intel Centrino 6230

Image from inSSIDer Home: https://www.dropbox.com/s/gu522z8el6lgwbi/wifi.jpg?dl=0 (the 5GHz not appears on this room)

Thanks for any tip!

Not sure if this helps, but the 5GHz signal will have half the penetration assuming that it's using the same signal strength as the 2.4GHz signal.   If you use different SSIDs on different bands maybe force the distant devices to use the 2.4GHz signal and the closer devices to use the 5GHz signal?

The 2.4GHz signal can be optimized too.  The channels overlap, so pick 1, 6, or 11.  3 overlaps with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 IIRC.   And as you can see, your software recommends 11.

So without any ability to boost the signal, this might provide some relief.

* Channel 11.
* 5GHz where your devices support it and are located closely to the router.
* 2.4GHz for your more distant devices.

Different SSIDs allow you to control which devices are picking what channels.

5GHz should be your first choice since the spectrum is more open, but you may need to juggle, unfortunately.  At least if you force your stuff to 5GHz where it's close, it's removing those devices from the 2.4GHz spectrum, leaving more of that open for the more distance devices.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
