Show (e.g. through log entries, etc) what time the disks got woken up and why!

USB connected drives -- on the box.  If the electronics support it of course.  IMO this is/was a HUGE omission from this unit.  Being able to move data/back-up the unit "out-of-band" would save time and hassle.

* FTP SERVER:
- SSL support
- FTP logs
- FTP current status info (uptime, connected users etc., current transfers from FTP)
- Unicode

* Schedule downloads:
- remove URL length limit (very often I can't download things because URL is longer than 120 chars, for example I couldn't download SP3 from Microsoft)
- queueing
- pausing & resuming
- BT client page doesn't need to be refreshed. I'd like D-Link to use the same technique for Schedule downloads page
- ability to rename files. In current firmware you can only choose where to download file but you can't change its name while adding task (you always have to download file with its original name)

* BITTORRENT:
- queueing
- allocate and zero new files on creation
- scheduling torrent downloads
- ability to choose which files to download in a batch torrent
- remove security flaws: everybody has full access the BT share, it's possible to access BT download without authentication (http://"dns323_ip"/web/bt/fe01.html)

-> Adding/monitoring torrents and download tasks from external application (for example from Easy Search Utility).

* NETWORK ACCESS SETTINGS

- You can add your own share folder but you can't change its name (it is always named the same as the folder on NAS it is referring to)
- Ability to change default share name Volume_1 to one of your choosing
- You can't share folders with some national characters (share folder is visible in Network Neighbourhood but when you try to open it gives you an error). Japanese letters are fine. But Polish or Russian doesn't work :( -> http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=1776.0)

* UPnP MEDIA SERVER
- updating content instantly by SMB and FTP transfer !!!
- support for: OGG, FLAC, MKV, APE, IFO, ISO, AAC, DIVX
- ability to monitor more than one folder (in current firmware you can only add one folder+its subdirectories or monitor the whole volume)
- shoutcast internet radio stations

* Syslog support

* Journaling file system (EXT3)

* S.M.A.R.T monitoring page

* Defragmentation tool

* Utility to scan HDD for bad sectors

* SSH (secure shell)

* HTTPS (SSL) for system administration pages

* Other tweaks:

- I don't like that script in firmware configuration pages for selecting directories. If you have many subdirectories it takes to long to list them + it opens new window. Could D-link write something better (using more modern web technologies)? For example have you seen similar script in Twonky server configuration (It's faster and uses the same window).

Well... Web file server function exists. But it seems it's not finished yet (use at your own risk) + it's buggy + user interface is bad (read the discussion: http://forum.dsmg600.info/p15473-2008-05-23-13%3A30%3A20.html#p15473 ). Let's hope this functionality will be officially added in 1.06 firmware (of course after D-link engineers will rethink that "5 different tabs" idea).

Took the words right out of my mouth and more.

Would like to be able to specify more than 1 directory structure to be shared under uPnP ( unless I'm nuts you can only specify 1 share right now - either root or a single alternate structure on the tree ).

From a data management perspective I personally prefer each user to maintain their own directory structure but within that we each might have a media collection we would like to make available over uPnP (assume there are no security limitations imposed that preclude that ).

I can and do spec multiple directory trees to be shared using WMP11 as uPnP Server and I would also note that this seems to require a heck of a lot less menu navigation on my Media Player (PS3) than using the DNS-323's uPnP server.

Would also like the ability to RENAME the admin account...

Talk about poor security.... the admin account name can't be changed (without voiding warrenty of course), in addition to the crippled password (not able to use special characters, and limited to a pretty short amout of characters, can't remember exact number off hand)...

Unless I missed it somewhere a disk wipe utility would be nice as well.

It would be nice to see the inclusion of a webserver with the firmware....

I know that lighttpd works on the 323.... Or, so I have heard ;)
Can ask for telnet or SSH access to it also, even though I know that won't happen.... At least there is always the software hacks I guess.

Media Server:
Linksys NAS200 come pre-installed with TwonkyMedia Server which is compatible with PS3, Xbox 360 for Photo, Music & Video.

Would like Dlink to match this and stop tweaking the current buggy UPNP av Server from unknown source.

USB Port:
Re-purpose the only one USB port for meaningful external storage, copy digital content from card/camera to disk.

BT Client:
Put some parameters to show that traffic is encrypted

WebFileManager:
- replace the current WebFile Manger to something usable and friendly with some basice human logic.  Not like the one in FW1.05b28.

Start/Stop/Restart Buttons for all the server services like
- ITune Server
- Media Server (hang frequently)
- Printer Server
- BT Client, etc...
- Download Manager/Scheduler
(Restart Button to revive the hang service, Stop to release memory from daemon services)

Status Report:
- to show the cpu utilization for period
- to show network utilization for period
- to show event log

Dlink firmware are always beta version, software quality is very low.

Free Open source product's quality are somehow much better.

I had originally purchased a Linksys NAS200, then returned it because it doesn't work as a Media Server for the Xbox360.  As a device the NAS 200 is painfully slow.  The 360 would list only about 1/2 of the songs on the NAS 200, and could not list,or play them from the Genre/Artist/Album etc. categories.  The 360 could only see the songs on the NAS200 if I did a plain list of all of the songs (and with about 7000 songs this wasn't very usable).

Having said that, I do want to see 360/PS3 media support on the DLink323.

twonky, works with both devices

I know Twonky is supposed to, but whatever came installed with the NAS200 firmware (current about 2 months ago when I still had the NAS200) didn't work properly with the 360.  The 360 worked fine connecting to an XP machine with Media Connect installed, but only partially worked with the NAS 200.  I didn't have my PS3 at the time, so I don't know how the PS3 was.  Since it was about 2 months ago I had the NAS200, they may have an updated firmware now that works better.  I didn't install Twonky myself on the NAS200 - it just had whatever comes with the firmware.
