Title: Access Control/schedule bug on 1.03FW
Post by: Slimline on October 23, 2012, 08:04:27 PM
OK, FurryNutz I have a good one for you. This took me a long time to isolate down to this sole issue. I upgraded to the 1.03fw about 2 weeks ago. I attempted to load my saved configuration and noticed the router was not connected to the internet. I logged on the router and saw that all of my DNS and ip addresses were associated, however the connection up time was showing N/A.

I restored factory config, and the internet started working again. Basically through trial and error and a ton of reboots I have isolated the root cause of the router not wanting to pick up my internet connection.

Long story short, I cannot have a defined schedule (i.e.monday-fri 2300~0600) blocking all access with more then 4 IP addresses associated with that schedule under the access control tab. If I have 4 or less, the router works as it should and I have internet access.

The minute I attempt to add a 5th ip address to that access controlled schedule, upon reboot my router shows Connection up time: N/A and I have no internet connectivity.

I tried to isolate it further, and have noted that I can block all access using access control with more than 4 computers as long as I have no user defined schedule, as in I just plain block all access using the ALWAYS setting.

I never had this issue on firmware 1.02. I can load my 1.02 firmware config file, reboot, no connectivity. If I delete any IP address totalling more than 4 per access  controlled schedule, boom I have connectivity. Something is the 1.03 firmware upgrade has broken access control. I tried redownloading 1.03 and the same issue happens.

Can someone else try this and see if there router loses connectivity? My ISP is cablecable, its a wireless broadband with 5mb down and 768k up.

I am curious if this is firmware and router wide or isolated to just me.

Have you factory reset, upgraded FW, factory reset once more then set up the router from scratch and not load any saved configuration file?

What browser are you using when you manage the router?
IP addresses reserved?

I have tried the factory reset route. Part of my troubleshooting step was to:
-factory reset
-leave all settings default
-create test schedule, mon-fri 2300-0600
-enable access control
-apply access control schedule test to 6 ip addresses within my DHCP range (192.168.0.150,192.168.0.151 etc)

This still causes my connection to show N/A and have no connectivity.

I have tried manually reentering parts of my config, with static Ip addresses that I have manually assigned to devices etc and it always fails to connect at greater than 4 ips associated with a given access control schedule.

I am using firefox from a wired lan connection. Setup has been working flawlessly as we speak given I have a maximum of 4 IP's associated to my rule. If i were to log on the router now, add one more ip address, it fails to connect. Something seems fishy. It worked fine on 1.01 and 1.02

On a side note, 1.03 has been rock solid for me while torrenting. No more lock ups!

I will give this a go on my 857 this evening and see if I notice the same thing. This could be isolated to the 827 or across all of the Amplfi lines...

I'll forward this to D-Link and see if they can reproduce as well. If it didn't happend on the other versions and now your getting problems on v1.03, I presume something could be broke.

You could do us a favor and do a factory reset, load v1.02, factory reset, and then configure your access controls again to verify that v1.02 works  and report your results please?

Sure I can try that when I get home this evening when I get home. I will post up my results as soon as I can.

Ok FurryNutz, test complete. My results are the same. I loaded 1.02, restored to factory settings and applied these settings:

-created schedule: "test" Sunday,Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Friday, 2300~0600
-enabled access control
-Created access control profile "test" with the schedule "test".
-associated ip's 192.168.0.150,192.168.0.151,192.168.0.152,192.168.0.153,192.168.0.154,192.168.0.155,192.168.0.156 with the "Block all" setting
-rebooted router
-Internet connection connected successfully, router working as normal

I then reloaded 1.03 firmware, factory reset, followed the same directions and had Internet connection status showing "N/A" again. I then deleted 3 of the ips to bring the total of controlled ip's down to 4, rebooted the router and voila! Internet connection showing connected and working as normal.

My guess is either the firmware has a coding error or my router is bad. Considering everything works fine on 1.02 I think it is firmware. As I do not have a dir-857 to test on I can not verify whether this is across the whole amplifi line.

Ok, I have loaded the same rules into my 857 and used 7 IPs and rebooted the router and I'm connected. Playing MW3 right now. This maybe be isolated to the 827 and v1.03. Only thing is that I'm using 12 hour time and not 24hour time in the Schedule.

Hmm maybe it is isolated to the 827. I did try using 12 hour time on my initial test and it was still causing me the same issues. I wish I knew someone else with this router.

Let me get a hold of Patrick553 and PacketTracer and see. I believe they have 827s.

I tried 24hr and it didn't effect or change anything on my 857. I might try the 657 and 645 this weekend and see since they are on the same product line.

In mean time, if anyone else and try this who has a 827 and try Slims access control rule setup and post results, please let us know.

Seen the chatter come across my E-mail. I am using this feature on v. 1.02 without a problem, my times are a little tighter for the kids but still fall short of 12 hours, kinda nervous about updating to 1.03 because everything works perfect.

I have a problem right now in Asia that is causing me to work late so I can talk to them live, the first opportunity I would have to load the new firmware would be Saturday morning(Please tell me that is tomorrow, Exhaustion!). After all the firmware problems I had with the 825, I would opt to go the 30-30-30 route instead of just a factory reset. But I honestly CRINGE at the thought of installing 1.03 since my IPV6 and everything is perfect. Except for DST using NTP, that is broken in 1.02 and has to be manually set. I remember the days when I would be stumbling over myself to get to a new firmware, now days its more like tarter sauce cat....... :-\

Let me know, if I need to take one for the team, either Saturday or Sunday morning, but I don't think it is a bad router since it only can be duplicated in 1.03.

Time to jump in my Pony and zoom off into the sunrise.........

I see they have the email notifications fixed so glad you chimed in.

Patrick, if you get some time this weekend, if you could try and reproduce his problem and see what results you come up with, it would be appreciated. Just kind of odd that using more that 4 or 5 devices in a rule is causing the WAN connection to go down.

I would save off the current configuration first, of course.  ::)
I would recommend doing a factory reset before and after the update. I don't think the 3x30 is needed and seems a bit to extreme. Factory resets work well for clearing any thing out of memory and settings.

And after the test, you an go back to v1.02 after since you'll have a saved configuration file.

Not sure if you'll want to keep v1.03 after or not. Seen some people have better experiences with v1.03 and manually setting up the router from scratch. So not sure if you'll want to try and apply the saved configuration file from v1.02 over v1.03. Might be work a test. Again, you can always go back to v1.02 as a last resort.

Thanks for your time and help sir and have a great weekend.

Yes, that is a confirmed bug! I tried it with IP addresses and MAC addressees. As soon as you go past 4 addresses, the router/wan connection no longer works.

I checked security and everything and it works fine and I will leave it on for a while as I only have 2 clients being filtered at this time.

Sorry for the delay, I have been fighting with Win 8 and making it look and act like Win 7 but taking advantage of my 8-Core processor and all the other goodies in the machine with the win 8 kernel. It just takes a little tweaking to loose Metro and regain Aero that is in hidden files, then you have a Win 8 desktop with full power and a start button(what were they thinking?)

As far as the D-link, next firmware please........

Thanks Patrick, I'll get this to D-Link for review.

How does Win 8 look? Have fun with Win 8.  ::)

Win 8 is Redmond trying to sell phones in a market dominated by Apple and Google, the UI is for a touchscreen and in no way will go mainstream in the business world unless they allow the old desktop. In it's native state, I won't talk like that in public, I got on-board because of the cheap price and the fact it would utilize my processor/machine 100%. In the preview you could just turn off Metro, now you have to hack a little. The new UI was not thought out like Apples at all, I think even on a touchscreen it would be a pain. We are JUST switching to Win 7 at work from XP, Win 8 is going to be another Win ME, a red herring. Unless you are running an 8 core processor I would recommend waiting this one out. On the upside, the only thing it would not work with is Symantec Endpoint 12.1, the install was seamless. When I switched from a 4 core to a 8 core processor on Win 7, not much diff, on Win 8, gaming is crazy smooth/fluid with the 8 core.

The E-mail server is still not working here, PT knows I am overloaded at work so I think he Ccd me on the PM's so I could come lend a hand. I will send you a direct e-mail via PM so you can let me know if you need me to duplicate something. D-Link took care of me during bad times, so no problems helping out.

Post by: FurryNutz on October 29, 2012, 09:19:11 AM
Wow, 8 core huh? I guess my dual core wont fit then. LOL

I'll wait and see it later. I'm enjoying win 7. Ya, work here just adopted 7 about a year ago. What Vista should have been.  >:(

I'm getting email notifications when people post responses in the forums so it should be working. I would check your forum settings and email settings on your side and see. I presume others are getting notifications as well. Let me know if you seem to be still having problems.

And thanks for the help, great to have expertise help on here.  ;)

Thanks for the update Patrick533! Man am I glad I am not going crazy lol. I just noticed today (I was going to retry 1.03 as I am suffering another issue with a dgs1008g switch losing packets) that 1.04 has been posted on dlink.ca. I will try that and see if they have already addressed the issue. However considering you mentioned that I need to post this in the bug forum, I doubt it has. What exactly would you like me to post FurryNutz?

Kind of off topic of the thread, but I too just installed windows 8 last night. I actually kind of like it which suprises the hell out of me. I hated no start button though, so I Installed start8. It basically turns the desktop back into a desktop like you mentioned. I love it, and it was totally worth 5 bucks. Check it out here (am I allowed to link?) http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ (http://)

FurryNutz, any idea what could be causing me an issue with my switch? I have two dgs1005d which work flawlessly, and now two dgs1008g which drop packets like crazy. I isolated the issue with different cables and bypassing the switch and its definitely the switches. Both lose anywhere from 3-65% of my packets. I am wondering if there is a negotiation issue, or maybe something with this dir-827. I am going to try 1.04 and see if that helps. I just got off the phone with senior tech support and am waiting on a call from the network engineer at dlink. Should prove interesting.

Great info, please post your inital post info about this issue in the bugs thread if you would please an any other info that you might gleam from tech support. Copy and paste if you want too.

Thank you.

Do both or just one switch seem to exhibit dropping packets? Swap switches to see. Do you have a spare router to put in the 827s place to test?

Hmmm, still not getting E-mail updates. :'(

I have been on 1.03 for 2 days with no problems, I don't recall which switch I have but it is a newer D-link Gigabit switch(DGS-2208 maybe). I did a couple of throughput tests yesterday, dead on 35 x 4 going through the switch. 8)

That's weird, Canadian firmware, the radio regs are the same for the states/canada. Maybe French Canadian?

Yes, start 8 is what I am using and I removed the Aero theme last night and went back to the stock 8 theme after turning the stupid start picture off, smoother and the clock was the wrong color under the old Aero theme. It actually went to sleep last night after loosing Aero. I tried everything even a computer BIOS update but it was the stupid hacked theme!

I posted in the problems forum for the 827. I have not tried to see if DST is fixed in 1.03 yet, next weekend!

I see that v1.04 is on the CA site however not on the U.S. site...yet. All of the version release notes match up accept release dates, CA seems to get released sooner than NA.

I would be careful, however I presume that v1.04 would work on NA units. Not sure if v1.04 will fix anything accept for the 404 problem and improved IPv6 support. Could give it a try and let us know.

I sent a email to my contact about this issue along with several other problems we'd like to get fixed, including the DST and email issue.  ::) I can tell you that using D-Links NTP server preset with DST checked and set for MST zone on my 857 is resulting in correct time being displayed on the router.  ;)

Let us know what v1.03 does for you Patrick.

Thanks for your input fellas.

Ok guys I managed to do some more troubleshooting. My isp is a wireless radio solution, and the storm last night blew my antenna out of whack. Had to climb the 30 foot tower today and readjust it. According to my ISP service voicemail they are having some network difficulties, my pings are all over the place and when I use the command prompt to ping say google, microsoft or facebook I am having time outs with any setup (including direct modem connection) This makes troubleshooting dropped packets with the switch futile unless I can test locally. I am not sure if I can replicate the error pinging locally.

FurryNutz I did bring up my other DGS1008g earlier today and it was showing dropped packets just the same when using www.pingtest.net. I pulled out my old dir-655 half an hour ago, hooked up the switch and couldnt get it to show any dropped packets through pingtest.net. This is fishy. I am going to triple check all my network cards have up to date drivers. Should I try manually setting the negotiation? When testing I disconnect most of my wired LAN to prevent interferrence. I have  fairly large collection of junk on my network. 1.04 on the dir-827 still had dropped packets with either dgs1008g switch, dgs1005d was still rock solid.

They are supposed to be plug and play auto negotiation, I cant fathom what would be causing the dropped packets. I mean, this is now three of the DGS1008g's I have tried and all do this on my network. I am beginning to think my network hates me. I am going to have to put my tests on hold until my connection stabilizes as any testing I do now may lead to false negatives.

I will however test 1.04 with more access control entries now and see if that has been addressed. I imagine it would be in the release notes if it was however.

I would presume it might take some time for D-Link to investigate this and get a fix into the works before we see it posted.  ::) I know that after almost an hour on the phone and 3 people last nite with a DIR-645 issue, supposedly, a fix for that will be made sometime this year. We'll see.

One thing I do recommend, and I know it's a pain, after we troubleshoot here and if we can find any fixes here, phone in and make contact, always has for level 2 or higher support. Any unresolved issues here need to be made known to D-Link directly. Problems seen by all need to phone in and let it be known for some of these problems that we can't fix here. I was asked if others had the same problems since they weren't aware of anyone else. So we as users need to help D-Link and make them aware of anything we can't seem to fix here. I've also learned that email support, at least for me on 2 different issues is not the best way to get the ball rolling. Phone is the best and even though it might take a while, get on the phone and move the problem up the chain as best as you can. Always have your ducks in a row, meaning you have details on what you have done, troubleshooting, updates, comparison on other HW and routers if possible and any forum help and information. Giving all this to the phone support people will help them understand the problem, tell them that we've already done most of the troubleshooting and that D-Link needs to take a hard look and provide users with feedback, resolution and fixes.

After all that we just have to be patient and wait for results.

Ok just tested the access control bug on 1.04, it is still present.

I would test the 1008gs with out being connected to the router, just do some testing between 2 PCs and see if you notice the dropped packets then. Remove ALL other "junk" from the network during this test if you can. Need to isolate and narrow down where the dropped packets are coming from. You should use WireShark to help you out. Then connect the switches to the 827 still using only 2 PCs. I would test with and with out the router being connected to the ISP modem. If the 1005d's are working well with 827 and the 1008g's aren't, I presume problem is with these. Also try swapping out cables. I highly recommend CAT6 if you aren't using that already.  ::) Do the DGS series have any sort of FW updates?

I am working 12's the next three nights, so I dont know if I will get an opportunity to look into my swith issue. Once I have some time I will most definitely try your recommendation of isolating the issue with two computers and no wan connection while using WireShark. That was my logical next step, I just didnt know what script or program to use to packet test across Lan. I have mixed cat 5e and 6, honestly I cant afford to wire my house with 6 right now. I have many spare cables that I can swap out for testing purposes, many I already have. Once I complete this test I can call Dlink and post here with my results. I have an asus RT-N12, dir-655 and my dir-827 available to test with. I am going to be sad if this is another issue I have solely with the 827 and one of their own switches.

Ok, I hope I can post this with enough clarity to not confuse everyone. (Including me lol) So I was able to get down to business and test my DGS1008G Switch which has been causing me issues with my DIR-827. It is worth noting I have two different revisions of this switch, as it seems important. I have Revision A1, and Revision B1. Revision B1 is my second version of this, as I exchanged it at the store when i first started experiencing my packet loss issues. I believe I have come to the conclusion that revision B1 of the DGS1008g rev B1 has an incompatibility with the DIR-827, or the DIR-827 dislikes my isp.

I think the easiest way to explain my findings is to list my test methodology. I utilized the same cables for all tests and I will tell when I swapped a component. My Desktop and Laptop were the only peripherals connected to the routers/switches during these tests. They were attached for all tests.

I am sorry FurryNutz, I installed wireshark and it looked awfully complicated for me for now so my tests were using command prompt pings and pingtest.net

Test 1:
DGS1008G REV B1, DIR-655 Router, Wired Lan, NO WAN,
-11 minutes of pinging laptop from desktop through command prompt. 657 packets sent, 657 received, errors 0.
-Test pass

Test 2
DGS1008g REV B1, DIR-827, wired lan, NO WAN
-11 minutes of pinging laptop from desktop through command prompt. 658 sent, 658 received, 0 lost
-Test Pass (It is worth noting that when pinging the 827, I notice 1-2 second pauses about every 8-10 pings, however it does not show any greater latency then 1ms, nor does it report any lost packets)

Test 3
DGS1008g REV B1, DIR 827, wired lan, WITH WAN, pingtest.net packet test
- numbers listed as sent-received,
250-250, 250-249, 250-250,250-250,250-249,250-249,250-250,250-248,250-250,250-249
-Test fail. Packets consistently lost

Test 4, same config as test 3, with factory reset 827 on fw1.04
-250-244,250-238,250-229
-Test Fail

Test 5, Same Config as tests 3 and 4 but with DGS1008G REV A1

-test pass

In conclusion, the DGS1008G revision B1 loses packets of internet traffic when connected to my DIR-827. Revision A1 does not appear to have this same issue. This is my second DGS1008g B1, as i exchanged it in store. DGS1008G Rev B1 appears to work perfectly fine when Dir-655 router is used, issue only present when connected to the dir-827. My DGS1005D still works fine with my DIR-827, no lost packets through internet traffic.

I feel as if I knew how to use Wireshark, it would report problems with the LAN traffic when using the DGS1008g B1. The pauses when I ping computers is fishy to me, and I only see it with the B1 revision switch. I am not sure why command prompt doesnt show a delay in milliseconds when this happens. It also shows no dropped packets. Maybe its paranoia.

All I know is my DGS1008g B1 does not function properly when connected to my 827. I had contacted Dlink over phone support as noted in my previous post. They want to send me a new DGS1008g. I think this is a router issue still, and the switch is fine. It is odd however that the A1 revision does not appear to have the same troubles. I wonder if any hardware or coding was changed between the switch revisions. FurryNutz, where do I go with this now? Should I try to get my dir-827 warranty replaced? Maybe I have a faulty gen 1 unit? I did buy it very soon after release.

Awesome info Slim,
So do both A1 and B1 switches work with out loss on the DIR-655?

Does seem like there is a problem with the ISP Modem or service, B1 and the 827. I would be interesting to see if this is exhibited across the amplify line...Any interesting in letting someone test the B1 out on a 857, 657 and 645?  ::)

Can you take a wire-shark capture on with the B1 and 827 and do the same testing. Save and keep the file. You don't need to look at it however should D-Link need to review it, it would be good to have it on hand if they do need it. I might have you send it to me and maybe I can pick out something.

Where did you get your switches from?
Who is your ISP service and what make and model is the ISP modem?

Yes, the A1 and B1 switches both work without issue on my dir-655. I have an asus RTn12 I could possibly try as well but it is finicky to begin with and may skew my results. My ISP is www.cablecable.net (http://). It is a wireless solution to my home since I live in the country. I generally have very good service, I have their wireless ultra bundle with 6mb down and 640kb up. My antenna was blown out of Line of sight a week ago during the Sandy storm, however I climbed up and reset it, confirming with tech support my connection is excellent. My ISP modem is an RCA DCM425. I wouldnt mind letting someone test the switch, however depending on where you live it could cost more for me to ship it then to buy one lol.

I would take a wireshark capture if I knew how to use it. I installed it and it looks pretty foreign to me lol. Tonight at work maybe I will try reading the howto about it. I am self taught in network stuff and still pretty amateur. I like learning about it, however it can be difficult to self teach some stuff that is far over my head to start. I bought my switch from NCIX online, and exchanged it at the NCIX store in markham ontario.

Ah your in Canada, ya, might be to much to send via mail evening though I will be visiting Victoria this coming xmas.  ;D

Do you have any other friends, family or neighbors you could take the switch and router to and test with there ISP modem to see if the problem follows? Would be a good test to see if you can test this out using a different ISP modem.  ???

Ah, that is a fantastic idea! I actually had not thought of trying the switch/router with a different ISP. Hmm, on my next day off I will most definitely try and arrange a test like that.

Almost sounds like there is a firmware issue/conflict between the switch and router.

Both these are Gigabit routers? And I assume gigabit switches. It almost sounds like some sort of race condition is causing the switch to drop packets (timing mismatch causing collisions). Both switches handle LBA? Maybe try turning LBA off or on. Full duplex or half duplex operation?

Is the WAN port set on "auto" speed, maybe try 100Mbps and 10Mbps manually on the DIR-827 WAN port. If one was worse then the other that may indicate something to a engineer with a schematic.

Because it only happens with the WAN hooked up maybe a store and forward error in the switch. Does the switch have a newer firmware(most don't).

Going home to a computer in pieces so until my machine is back up..........

My slightly educated 2 cents.

Pat

All are gigabit switches and routers yes. I had to google what LBA was, I dont know if they support it. It is something I can look into however. I have not tried playing with the duplex settings, everything is on auto negotiation. The switches light up showing gigabit activity but I dont know at what duplex. The wan port is most likely on auto speed, that isnt something I had thought about adjusting or to be honest knew I could. I head back to work here shortly but that is a quick fix check I can try when I am off next.

I am not entirely sure it only happens with internet activity, I have yet to full figure out wireshark to test LAN traffic properly. Ditching windows 8 eh? I like it so far with Start8 on. My windows 7 hadnt been formatted in over a year, but 8 feels snappier then I ever recall 7 feeling.

Any chance of testing an entirely different make and model switch?

Well i have two dlink DGS-1005D switches within my network I could do the same thign two, however I have no issues within my network that I have found with them in 24/7 service. I dont have another switch. I was debating buying the tp link 8 port unmanaged switch on sale for 15 bucks but thats just more money on hardware that I dont know if it will conflict with this router. At this point in time it almost feels wise for me to purchase a different router instead of playing the hardware lottery. I know newer hardware needs a few firmware updates to become a solid contender, and I am finding that out first hand. I just really need a dependable piece of equipment that doesnt need me spending every free day I have chasing loose ends. That access control bug took me quite some time to find, and now I have spent more time with these switches.

I may end up still buying it. I loved my dir-655, I want to love this router lol.

Happy Veterans day Furry, thanks for floating around the world and keeping us safe!

I can't find 1.04 on this site or the new site, FTP, ETC.

Is it released in the states?

It's the on the TSD site:

Problems Resolved:
1. Remove 404 feature.

I will pass, I wanted to try and help Slimline but being it is not on the US site this could cause some problems/ conflict for me.

Back to Win 7 with my new 512Gb SSD, I will wait until they work some of the bugs out of Win 8, I still have not received my Win 8 media anyhow.

I would recommend to Slimline to give the Dir-827 a little time to become mature, I offed the Dir-655 early on for bugs and now it is legendary. The 827 is just going through the evolution of having everything fixed. Look at me, I swore they could NEVER beat the DIR-825 and here I have the 827 covering my whole 3K ft+ home with 5Ghz wifi, the 827 was good for a room or two on 5Ghz in the same house with the router located in the same place. Love the 827!

Enjoy your day!

Pat

I still like the 825... Was a great upgrade from the DGL-4500 which I'd swore I'd never use anything else.  ::)

Not look at me.  ;D

Ya, might give the 827 a bit more time and I would check out some other switches to see if they exhibit any packet issues. I wish we were on the same boarder to help Slim out.  :-\

How much was the 512 SSD?

I'm gonna give Win 8 a demo. See what it's all about.

Thanks for the info and help Patrick, thanks for helping make our world safe and up and running.  ;D

I got a OCZ Vertex 4 512Gb on sale for $379 with free shipping. I tried to clone the Win 8 installation with no luck.

Boot is crazy fast, I was using speed-boost with a USB 3.0 thumb drive so it was not as big of a difference as I thought. The boot went from 5-10 minutes to 15 seconds. Everything else is almost instant. Photo shop 4 runs a few seconds to load. My old HD was a WD 1TB Black Edition, it will be a external back up next week after I get the USB 3.0/E-SATA case.

Game load times improved major. An older game, FEAR 2 only takes a couple of seconds. The whole system is now getting a 7.9 on the windows score.

I am done except for a heat sink for my video card, 85C while gaming with a 30C room is a little hot for my liking.

Hey guys no updates for me yet, havent been able to test the switches or router on another ISP. We just had out doctor visit and found out she is 3cm dilated and 80% effaced! So I will be a busy man the next 18 years lol. The doctor told me if we werent holding our daughter in 24-48 hours he would eat his hat. I told him I would hold him to that.

I just installed a gigabyte 7950 oc windforce to upgrade from my old 5850 that I had bios flashed and clocked as a 5870. HUGE improvement, I love it. I am realllly wanting to jump on the SSD train. I have a spinpoint F3 sata drive as my logical boot drive. I am thinking for affordability sake I will get a 240gb drive. A 512gb would be fantastic however. I am gonna put it on my Christmas wish list lol.

Sorry I'm more than 2 years late, but for anyone in the future potentially having help on this....sorry I never did find a solution. I contacted dlink but never got anywhere. My daughter was born safe and sound that night of my last post and has kept me busy ever since lol. I have up trying to work with the 827 and bought an Asus rt-n66u. it has been a fantastic router handling everything I throw at it. Unfortunately my 827 has left a bitter taste in my mouth,  I don't know if I'll buy another dlink router without heavy consideration. My switches have been working fine with the Asus. The 827 was just a poor quality product I think which is too bad. I looked at the firmware updates and it doesn't appear as though the issues here were ever addressed.

Thanks for all the help even if I'm 2 years late furry and Patrick.

Thanks for the feed back, better late then never huh?

I wonder if it was addressed in the last FW version. I acquired a 827 and didn't see any issues with it. However I didn't check on the access control issue you posted about. Other than this, the 827 is a great router and is solid for it's design and operation. I feel that there may have been a issue with the switches and the 827 FW. Particularly wit those model switches. I don't use D-Link switches so I may have not had the opportunity to see this issue. The 857/827 is a solid router as well for being the first model routers with internal antenna. I still have my routers and of course, all good things must come to an end as they are EOL now. New routers are out there and I really enjoy the DIR-868L. Another great router from D-Link. I'm working on the 890L currently.

Maybe you can use the 827 as a 2ndary AP at some point or for back up.

Good Luck.

Probably not to the extent of your collection, but I do have a router collection/graveyard. My parents are still running a dlink dgs30d or something like that, its probably getting on 12-15 years old now. I am going to take either my old dir-655 or the 827 and hook it up there for them. Either will provide a nice upgrade and hopefully continued service as there old dino is finally ready to sleep forever. I havent looked into the newer dlink line but I will be looking to move to wireless AC soon so I will be sure to consider them, although I am feeling pretty fond of my Asus router currently. (Dont hate me)

No worries if you go with something else. Come back to the forums for help and information on your next purchase. Please give D-Link another chance. The DIR-866 maybe worth looking at.
