Title: Regular drop outs
Post by: imcloughy11 on March 24, 2017, 02:20:42 PM
Hi all, picked up this adapter a few weeks ago and have had very regular drop outs, almost hourly, sometimes more.  It doesnt seem to matter if its under load or not, i can be gaming and suddenly it will start flashing blue, sometimes it will reconnect itself, sometimes it will connect to the wifi but has no internet and i have to disconnect/reconnect manually.  None of the other devices in my house have this issue. $5 dlink pci wifi card works on this machine with no issues.  I have removed all previous network drivers and reinstalled.

Windows 10 x64
latest dlink device drivers
no overlapping devices or interference.
802.11n with WPA2 2.4Ghz

Any ideas?

Using latest drivers from the web site?
What Mfr and model is the main host router?
What security modes are you using on the main host router?

Is the USB connection on the PC 2.0 or 3.0? I've noticed that this adapter doesn't work well on USB 2.0 connections or cables.
Be sure any USB extension cables are also USB 3.0 compliant.

I'm in Australia, I have tried the latest drivers from the website, and also the initial "1.0" drivers. Same issue.  Security is just WPA2.  The router is just an isp supplied TG-1 (http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/hardware/?action=h_view&model_id=1662 (http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/hardware/?action=h_view&model_id=1662)) I know its a bit ****, but it seems to work fine with all of my other devices (laptop/ipad/phones/consoles etc)

Usb is 3.0, no extension cable, just the cable that was in the box.

Not sure if it's relevant, but heres my hardware.

CPU: i7 4790k@4.5Ghz
Ram: 16GB Hyper X 2133
Mobo: MSI Z97 Gaming 5
GPU: GTX 1080ti founders

Can try drivers from the USA site and see.

I also notice that my 192 starts blinking here and there when connected to my DIR-890L in Windows 10x64. Like now. I need to load up Windows 7 and test.

Also check channels that your main host router is using, try manual channel 1, 6 or 11 or 13 on 2.4Ghz or manual any channel on 5Ghz.
Might test with wifi security set to open as a quick test to see if same thing still happens. Re-enable WPA2 after testing.

I'm on Windows 7x64 now and will see if the adapter starts blinking. I believe this was a Windows 10 thing.  ::)

Switched to my Windows 7x64 partition and installed the 192 drivers here. So far no drop outs with it.  ;)

yeah unfortunately the drop outs don't happen consistently,  Earlier today i had multiple in 30 minutes, so far i've been connected for 2 hours without one.  Going back to Win 7 isn't an option just to get this thing to work unfortunately (DX12)

I'll pass this on to D-Link for review. I do think there is a Windows 10/192 issue.

installing those intel drivers does seem to work, 6 hours with no drop out now, it's a little irritating having to reinstall them every boot though.  It's not the first time its lasted this long without a dropout though so i'll report back tomorrow :)

What wireless modes, channels are you using?
Can you set single mode G, WPA and TPIK only on manual channel 11?
I'd like to see if this thing looses connection on legacy modes...
Does your router have 5ghz radio by chance?

I do notice that in Windows 7, the connection is lost in networking and the adapter disappears however the blue LED on the adapter is solid.  :o

Another question, does your PC sleep or go into Hibernation mode at all?

Channel 11, no interference. It does the same thing with no security on the wifi. No 5ghz. Seems to drop out regardless of wireless standard used.  802.11b/g/n is the wifi standard, dropping it down to just 802.11b/g had no effect besides completely crippling my connection, still dropped out.  The pc has sleep and hibernation disabled, no screensaver etc either

I'll try and get a hold of another router tomorrow and see how that goes, not sure thats the issue though, nothing else is having issues with the wifi.

Also can you check USB bus power save mode and disable that and see if it works.
"Simply go into Device Manager, navigate down to Universal Serial Bus controllers. On each USB Root Hub item, right-click and choose Properties. Click on the Power Management tab and un-check the box for Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

So just after a while the adapter stops broadcasting/connecting? When you pull the cable out and plug back in does it reconnect?
Title: Re: Regular drop outs
Post by: imcloughy11 on March 28, 2017, 09:59:44 AM
switching off the usb power save was the first thing i tried unfortunately.  Yeah it will randomly lose connection to the wifi, it stays enabled (as in the pc knows its there) but it disconnects from the wifi.  Most of the time it will auto reconnect.  Yeah after unplugging it will pick up the connection right away, as it does on initial boot.  It wouldn't be a big deal with it losing connection, i dont transfer files using wifi, but it's down long enough to boot me from any online game i may be attempting to play at the time. Which makes it almost unusable for me.  If it weren't for every other device in my household working fine with no issues i'd chalk it up to the router, but this device is the only one with issues of any kind.

Might review this as a side note:
"The software bundled with the AMD stuff is called "AppEx Networks Accelerator". Specifically common with Realtek NICs but also wireless."

Hello

Currently, I have a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro and latest drivers for the DWA-192. It is connected to a wireless router at 2.4Ghz.

Let us wait and see how long it will stay on.

Oh BTW,

I have been using DWA-192 for almost a year on windows 7 and 8. I have not encountered any issues related to yours. Its been working flawless on the latest firmware available.

Please try 5Ghz as well. I mostly connect mine to the 5Ghz radio. 890L with Smart Connect enabled.

Thank you for helping out.  ;)

Ok I disabled all PM for the USB hubs and found one for the adapter in Windows 10. Going to leave it and see what happens.

Found a setting for selective usb device power saving in the windows power settings, switched that off.  I doubt it is the culprit as i can't imagine is switching off active devices, but who knows, worth a try.

Dropped out again, managed two hours.  Out of curiosity i tried it with a fresh format/windows 10 install.  Same problem obviously.

Did you find the power setting under the 192s adapter properties as well and disable that?
I found that yesterday evening and disabled it and all PM features for the USB HUBs I found under Device Management.
192 seems stable. I'll come back today and check on it after work.

I'm wondering if there maybe a problem between the 192 drivers, Windows 10 and the wifi on the router.

Can you set Medium or Low power mode on the router and see if the adapter still drops?
Let us know if you can test a different router. I'll do the same here.

Ok, my 192 was up for 15 hours on 2.4Ghz. I left it overnight with a continuous ping to the gateway and a Youtube video on repeat.

I will switch to 5Ghz and leave it overnight.

Smart Connect enabled?
Is your Power Management features for USB HUBs and the adapter enabled or all disabled? Mine are now.

Also a good test would be to leave the PC and 192 at idle. I presume the PC and adapter should still be connected and usable when you come back say a few hours later or next day. I'm doing this test currently.

I'll stop the video playback and the continuous PING, to test overnight.

Is the IP address intact? Do a ipconfig in Command Prompt and check Wi-fi status, after it drops out.

All power saving is switched off, in windows and the adapter individually.  I'll check the ip etc next time it drops.  Trying a new router now, will post back.

This modem is the Huawei HG659.  I'm a little limited as to which modems i can try as im on a VDSL2 100/40 FTTN connection, comaptibility isn't the highest.  I can try 5Ghz with this model though.

So my Windows 10 still had the 192 connected.
I've switch over to Windows 7x64 and now testing. Will leave it run and see what I find out later on tonight and tomorrow.

So I check the adapter right before going to bed, it was still ON and connected will in Windows 7. I ensured all PM features were disabled and re-installed the drivers to be sure. I'll recheck after work today, err after movie. New movie releases to day. Woo Hoo.  ;D

Alright, my DWA-192 has been up for 1day and 1 hour on 5Ghz. Its been connected to a 880L with smart connect disabled and powered through USB 3.0.

I'm leaning towards a hardware defect or wireless interference on your side, imcloughy11.

Was getting drop outs still with new modem, and took it with me to my daughters house and still having issues.  I'll send the thing back for RMA and see if i have any luck with the new one, or just start drilling holes and running cables.  Thanks for all your time guys.

Ok, lets try an RMA.

I just put my 890L online. Aside the fact that the adapter disappeared during the transition of turning OFF the radios on one router and powering ON the 890L. I had to unplug the 192 and back in to get the adapter to appear. It's connected now and will see how it goes.

Keep us posted on the RMA.

No adapter disappearing while in Windows 7x64 this morning. The blue LED was solid however no IP address seen for IPCONFIG /all. This is with the 890L. I disabled the USB adapter then re-enabled it to get the adapter to re-appear in Windows to simulate pulling the usb plug in and out.

Going to check Windows 10 and come back tomorrow.  ::)

Left 192 connected to 890L while in Windows 10. Still connected.

I'm wondering if my Windows 7x64, DWA-192 and DIR-890L are having issues.  :-\ The only PC configuration that seems affected. The adapter disappears from Windows 7x64 while connected to the 890L. I didn't see this happen with a non-D-Link wifi router.  :o

Is that the beta 890L?

I have had my 192 connected to a 890L many times on Windows 7 before I switched to a 880L. I know a colleague and he has used the 192 with no issues with a 890L as the main router on Windows 7. However, we do not use "smart connect".

Yes.   ???

192 has been connected solid on my Windows 10x64 partition on my PC since turning OFF all PM features though. Odd that Windows 7x64 disappears from the networking list. It's solid when I'm using it though. IOnly seems to happen when connected to the 890L

I presume it's this beta 890L I have as when I tested a non-D-Link router with the 192. Didn't see any drops or dis-connects.  ;) I'll put my 880L back online and re-test for posterity.

Hi all. I have had similar issues to the OP and have a similar setup, situation and region. My 192 was dropping out every 30 seconds unless I was downloading something. I went into the device manager, USB Root Hub (xHCI) and unchecked the box 'allow this computer to turn off device to save power' in the power management tab. I now have a sustained connection for the past 2 hours

Thanks for posting and confirming. Also uncheck any PM features for the adapter itself in networking.

Enjoy.

FYI, anyone experiencing connection problems on Windows after updating. Check the in box USB 3.0 cable that came with the 192 adapter. Could be faulty. ::)
