What limits the Upload Speed of the DWA-552?
« on: August 13, 2014, 01:42:36 PM »

Hi All,

What limits the upload speed of the DWA-552 Adapter?

I have 50 MBps Download and 50 MBps Upload Speed from Verizon FIOS.

Yet, when I run the Speedtests on the Web, my Upload Speed is usually half that of the Download Speed Test.

Being Wireless to the Router, I understand that the Download speed is half of the 50 MBps, but I don't understand why I am seeing about 12.5 Mbps upload.

You may not or may not see that same speeds as your ISP Link speeds. Remember that the Connection rate between the 552 and the 655 differs from what flows thru the two. Wireless speed testing maybe impacted by the many variables that contribute to inaccurate speeds results. Wired LAN cable speed testing is preferred.

What wireless modes are you using on the 655?
What channel width are you using?
What security mode are you using?
What connection rates are you seeing on the 655 for the 552 adapter?

  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

Hi FurryNutz,

Changed. Did test from wireless Computer with the DWA-552 Adapter.

Now on my Wired Computer.

Ran two Speed Tests.
One connected directly to my Verizon M1424WR Router.

One connected to my D-Link DIR-655 A3 Router.

Why the difference between the two?

How do you post the images from your FTP Server?

Hi Fuzzy,

Thanks again. Fixed. Disabled only the QOS Engine, Traffic Shaping and adjust the Top Speed on the Livingroom Computer and much faster than I had been.  ::)
