DIR-825 20x slower than MN700 Plez halp...
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:38:14 AM »

Swapped out working MN700 for a new DIR-825 (B1, 2.02) connected to trusty Sppedstream 5360 DSL modem. Download speeds:
MN700 5.4 Mbit/s
DIR-825 198 kbit/s (!)
Had to manually set the link to 10 Mbps as per many other links to get a connect at all. Seems many other people can't get DSL connects at full speed with this known issue. QOS off, tried all that stuff.
(edit - this is on wired, no wireless issues except just as slow)

Is there any hope or does it go back to the store?

thanx

What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?
Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.
Swap the cables between the modem and router. Make sure cables are in good working condition.
Ensure ALL QoS options of off for testing.

  • Standalone Speedstream 5360 DSL. This has been shipped in high volume by many ISPs, in this case Bell Canada.
Didn't want to set static addresses for everything - shouldn't have to.
DNS relay and QOS on and off, remove all but one computer etc etc no difference
    Swap cables, no difference

Trolling through the net it seems this is not an uncommon problem (Speedstream routers and only 10 Mbit/slow connect to DLink)

Hope it gets fixed for others

Spend 2 weeks of evenings, took the router back. In the PC business and I know what this does to profits and it does make me sad. BUT - very common modem, very known problem for years - should have been fixed.

Its probably a modem thing as most ISP Modems work well with Dlink routers. It's preferred to buy your own Modem for ISP connections. If the Speedstream modem only supports 10Mb connections then thats what it supports. Some modems do 100 and Gb. Have to find the modem that works best for your needs.

Arrgh.
old mn700 router connects and gives me 6mb/s to modem, but not to nooks
new dir825 only gave 200 kb/s to modem, but connects to nook
10mbps is not the problem - old router is 20x faster...
Modem choice is controlled by ISP, not me

People keep randomly saying "buy a new router" "replace your nooks" "buy a new modem" "google buggered android 2.2 try a new ROM"
Throw it all together and hope it works - that approach is so wrong!
I can't keep buyin n tryin
There must be troubleshooting tools!

Perhaps if there were poducts that gave a simple 100mps WITH NO FANCY FEATURES that always worked, rather than everone's marketing saying "oooh I have 300mpbs - just doesn't connect"

There, I'm done. Bye.

1. With my trusty old MN700 router connected to the ISP supplied 5360 Speedstream DSL modem, I get ~6 mbits/s download=happy...but the MN700 won't connect to Nooks (caused by long hostnames with illegal underscores, Google's fault...)
2. So I bought a DIR-825 - good specs & reviews, happy with my DNS-321
4. At first, DIR-825 would not connect at all to the 5360
5. Web digging turned up that the auto setting in many routers fails to connect to 5360. This has been known apparently on web for years - so I would have hoped the "auto" setting in routers would fix this, oh well.
6. Set DIR-825 WAN link manually to 10 mbps and voila - connects to 5360 and nooks, almost happy.
7. But...after getting 6mbps to ISP using MN700, only got 200kbps using DIR-825 - really bad

So boiling it down to one issue:
-Can't switch modems - ISP's control, not me
-How can a DIR-825 get 6mbps connected to a 5360?

sorry for the long thread, but it's been weeks of evenings to get this far...

Understand the frustration, let see if we can help here:

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
It's preferred to bidge DSL modems if they have a built in router and the the DIR router do the work.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G and N or mixed G and N for each radio.
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Any router log entries during this time frame?

Disable QoS Engine all of the options for it.
Enable Traffic Shaping -
Automatic Uplink Speed -
Manual Uplink Speed -
Connection Type: DSL
