DIR-601 keeps dropping VPN and ssh connections
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:09:40 PM »

I just set up a new DIR-601.

Now, whenever I make a VPN or ssh connection, it gets dropped, always after about 3 minutes.

Here are the messages from the system log:
Code: [Select]
closing control connection due to missing echo reply
Sent control packet type is 12 'Call-Clear-Request'
Closing PPTP connection
Sent control packet type is 3 'Stop-Control-Connection-Request'
Closing connection (call state)

In answer to typical questions:

* What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Cable

* What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
Stand alone

* What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Motorola SB5100. This problem never happened with my old router and same modem.

* Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Done. I am using Google DNS servers.

* Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turned off QoS. Not sure what the "Gamefuel" thing is.

* Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Done

* Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Done

* Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Done

* Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
My computer connects to the router via DHCP.

* Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Done

Re: DIR-601 keeps dropping VPN and ssh connections: SPI problem it seems
« Reply #1 on: November 25, 2011, 06:54:03 AM »

UPDATE: I tried disabling Stateful Package Inspection (SPI) and the problem went away.

How insecure is it to use the router with SPI permanently disabled?

You should keep it on. You probably need to set up port forwarding or some rules do that the firewall wont interfere with the VPN. Talk to your IT dept. about this.

Thanks, but on the box it says "Wireless N Home Router" so I bought it for my home. It is supposed to work for people who don't have an I.T. department
If anyone here can show me how to configure this router so that it can safely manage standard tasks like VPN and ssh connections, I will be very grateful. Otherwise it is going straight back to the store for a refund.

Thats the thing though, VPNs are not standard and differ for each one that is deployed from each companies. Who ever handles your VPN is where you need to go to get configuration help, you need any port forwarding or application configuration needed for any router that you VPN thru. Mostly any router will handle VPNs just fine however some might have special configurations. My roommate has VPN there isn't any configurations need for his. Doesn't mean your does or doesn't. I would ask though.

What is your ISP service? Cable or DSL?
What is your ISP Modem make and model #
Having a ISP modem with a built in router can also inpact how external routers connect and applications such as VPNs.

OK, so the facts are:
1) It drops all ssh connections after 3 minutes. I have never had this problem with any previous router.
2) It drops all VPN connections after 3 minutes. This includes different VPN servers with different configuration info. These also worked perfectly with all previous routers.
3) My cable modem is just an ordinary Motorola modem, not a router.

The fact that the problem occurs for ssh as well as VPN, and occurs for different VPN servers, makes me think it is more than just some VPN configuration issue.

I would recommend you try a different router and see if this continues to occur with using the VPN. You could have a bad router. I would recommend a DIR-655 or DGL-4500. I have both and they work with my roommates VPN with out any configuration.
