Title: DIR-655 B1 and PPTP cable connection disconnecting
Post by: tomidix on September 16, 2012, 04:34:03 AM
- Latest firmware: DIR-655_fw_revB_2-06B04_all_en_20120607.zip
- downloaded from: ftp://ftp.dlink.cz/dir/dir-655/driver_software/
- issue occurs on older firmware versions, too

- PPTP connection with Cisco EPC2203 cable modem (EuroDOCSIS2)

This is menace, happens xx times a day and cable operator says it's not issue with them. And I think they're right, because they're selling DIR-635 with specific firmware version which can be downloaded from: http://portal.bnet.hr/DLinkFW/DIR635B3_FW234EUb05(0121170750).bin

Is it possible to extract pptp.so library from it and use it with this firmware or something? It's clearly issue with control packets.

Version in this DIR-655 2.06b4 firmware:
Code: [Select]
Jun  8 16:00:00 notice  pppd 2.4.3 started by root, uid 0

Jun  8 16:00:00 info  Plugin /lib/pptp.so loaded.

Thanks for support.

You'll need to contact your regional local DLink support office, say Level 2 and ask them about this. Maybe they will be able to help get your connection stable. As for extracting files from FW. Thats not possible. Let us know how it goes.

Good Luck.

Everybody bounced me off in a way that there is "nothing wrong at their end", so I googled "d-link pptp disconnecting" and figured out that there is something seriously wrong in a way how D-Link routers handle PPTP connections in general (thousands of relevant results for that issue). I've found answer in some of the threads here - I've set UDP and TCP endpoint filtering to endpoint independent and issue is gone completely. That means that firmware somehow rejects PPTP connection control packets and should be fixed properly, seriously.

Also, new beta is out DIR655B1_FW206B05Beta1.zip from September.

However, Shareport 1.17 is not working in Windows 8 and DIR-655 hasn't still received support for new Shareport 4 application. When is that going to get fixed? Any chance for Linux (Ubuntu) support since there is OS X app?

Thanks

So did they offer any help on getting the PPTP connection going?

I kind of doubt that there will be any more FW releases as, at least for NA, the 655 has hit EOL. Not sure how long it will be before for EU.

Shareport v1.17 is a old version and will not be updated either I presume. I would try v4. It's what I have been using on Win 7x64 for a while now.

Over all, if you can't seem to get PPTP going, I would try a different router, say a newer model like a DIR-645 or a 857. Maybe one of these has better PPTP handling. Not if one of these still fails, it's possible there is an issue between the ISP service, ISP modem and the D-Link routers. Are there any other ISP services there that uses something else other than PPTP protocols?

Like I said  - "I've set UDP and TCP endpoint filtering to endpoint independent and issue is gone completely".

Well, I can live with that.

It seems that EU firmware code works only with Shareport 1.17, nothing newer. WW firmware code accepts even Shareport Plus 4.1.1. Incredible, what a development cycle mess. (facepalm)

Maybe DIR-655 is EOL in NA region, but for EU development is still in progress, c/p from latest beta:

Then I think we can call this a work around and hope it will come in handy for those using PPTP connections and this model router.
Have you tried WW code and SP v4? I presume Win 8 and SP v1 or older versions probably wont see any resolution.

Ya, ever really understood why the development cycles are crazy like this. I guess as long as you got it working well.

Enjoy.

Italian D-Link forum has this info:
Download firmware WW per revisioni hardware Bx: 2.06(WW)B04 beta1

... but their download link is broken. Any idea where to get that 2.06 WW or other newest WW?

Thanks for your time.

Try here:

Though I only see v2.00WW listed  :-\

Now it's starting to be funny.   ;D

On that tsd microsite, I have found Shareport 1.20 with yesterday's(!) modification time but... That even doesn't work on Win 7.

2.00 version doesn't support my Epson Stylus Office BX305F.  ;D

Can you get in contact with dev crew? This is incredible... And ask them is there newer WW or when EU versions will get Shareport 4.xx support?

I would phone contact level 2 support and ask them if there is any information on this. I don't know of any contacts with the Dev teams.

Then how this is the official forum if you can't send feedback to devs?  :)

I've figured out this mofo.

EU firmware version uses older protocol silex virtual link server (original name for Shareport) which uses UDP 9303 port.

NA firmwares and newer Shareport versions than 1.17 (3.7, 4.1.1.) uses newer protocol version which uses UDP port 19540.

That's why newer software doesn't see DIR-655 with EU firmware for Christ's sake.

I'll forward this on to the Admin and see where it goes from there. Good info.

Nailed it.

I've crossflashed it to 2.07NA firmware (holding reset button while powering up, orange light blinking, entering recovery flash mode) since it doesn't allow me in regular way.

Everything works fine, Shareport 4.1.1, SX Virtual Link 3.9.1... And even mine PPTP connection.

So, everything is just the same and works fine. EU firmware branch is just a gimmick which wasn't updated properly to newer Shareport/Virtual Link protocol.

Just be aware that NA firmware is different from EU. Mainly in the WiFi section I believe.

Honestly, I don't see any difference... Maybe I got Homeland security backdoor as a bonus? :)

I think EU units get one or two extra wireless channels than we do...
Well, if it's working for you and you get SP and your PPTP connections working. Enjoy man. Might be new life for you on the router.
