All Wifi connections drop when playing a game over Xbox Live
« on: November 13, 2013, 09:27:03 AM »

I recently upgraded my DGL-5500 to 1.11 from 1.01 to get the performance improvements, but now I've got nothing but head-aches if I try to kill some time playing my Xbox 360 over Xbox Live. :'(

Everything worked prior to the upgrade.

I'm able to connect to Xbox Live (I have a Port Forwarding Policy for the required ports), but when I try to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 just before the actual game play starts I get an error stating I've been disconnected from Xbox Live.
If I look at my Android Phone, iPhone4s (work phone), and Win7 Laptop they all show the WIFI as down. They eventually reconnect to the router.

I can reproduce the drop each time I try to play through Xbox Live. :'(

My ISP is Charter and I have the Cable Modem they provided (Cisco DPC3010) and the DGL-5500.

From the Log I can see UDHCPD received a SIGTERM.

When I did the upgrade I did the factory reset (twice) and configured the device from scratch. I've also reset the network connection on the 360, but the issue still occurs.

I was thinking about putting 1.01 back on the device, but thought I'd reach out for help first.

I also tried emailing D-Link support (twice), but have not heard anything from them.

Here is the Log:

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Is the xbox wired or wireless?

You don't need to Port Forward anything. Just set up the router from scratch. Enable Streamboost. Up to you to manually turn OFF ABE or manually use 100.00 and 10.00.

Also do a network factory rest on the xboxes. Review this for details on how to do that:
DGL-4500 Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL
Look towards the bottom for this info.

From there you can set the priority for the xbox to 1 and test.

The Xbox Slim is connected over Wireless. I have the DGL-5500 set for only N. HT20/40 is disabled.

Yes, factory reset before and after the firmware upgrade. I also reconfigured from scratch.

I do have a DHCP Reservation set for the 360.

SteamBoost is enabled with default settings 100 down/10 up. The 360 is set for top Priority.

I have also done the factory reset of the 360 Network Settings prior, and again today after removing port forwarding from router, but the connections still dropped.

Please run a wired LAN cable to the xbox from the router and test to see if this problem persists.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

Is this an xbox 360 Elite or Slim?

I'll try a wired connection and let you know.

I'm currently using Channel 11 and no other router within rage is using it. I have Wifi Analyzer on my Droid and see 3 routers within range. The channels are 1, 6, and 8.

I'm using WPA-Personal->WPA2>AES only. I will try TPIK only as well.

I have a cordless, but thinking it was causing an issues I unplugged it and pull batteries from handset, but no change.

My router is central to my house, which isn't that big (~1500sq ft). Approx 15ft away from my 360. Only thing close to the router is the cable modem.

My Xbox is the Xbox S, not the Elite.

FYI about xbox Slims on there onboard WiFi adapters:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=56416.0

If I remember I saw this issue on my roommate slim as well when connected on it's own WiFi adapter. I have connected him to a bridged wired WiFi adapter for better operation on the Slim.

Ok, so Wired connection works just fine.

Changed my wireless setting from AES only to AES/TKIP and once the game went to start the WIFI dropped.

What really blows my mind here is that I'm able to Stream Netflix through Wifi without issue. It's only when I go to play a game that the connection drops!  ???

I'm going to try reloading the 1.01 firmware tonight and see if things start working again or not.

Keep us posted...
Please follow this for going back to v1.01. Dont' reload any saved config files, just factory reset, send .bin file, factory reset once more then set up from scratch:

Well, reloaded 1.01 and I'm able to play on Xbox Live without all my WIFI connections dropping.

I factory reset, then loaded 1.01, then reset again. Next setup Wireless like I had before, and I'm off to the races.   ;D

Not sure if/when I'll try 1.11 again...

Ok, will pass this along to D-Link.
What is the distance between the 5500 and the xbox?

Thanks for sharing.

Broke out the tape measure....it's just under 14ft away. Not a clear line of sight though. There is a wall between, but no electrical or piping in the wall.
