DIR-868L as good as DGL-4500 for gaming?
« on: May 22, 2013, 08:35:59 AM »

Hello,  I've had a 4500 since it's release date, and since moving to my new home 5 months ago I've been looking into a new router.  1 because I want something with newer tech/faster wifi, and 2 because I'm now in a newer house so I'm hoping newer routers have more range/stronger wifi signal.  I have a slew of devices on the next work i.e. 2 xbox 360's, ps3, wiiu, 3ds, psvita, 3 iPads, 3 iPhone 5's, desktop pc, printer, Macbook Pro to name a few.  My current router handles all of this pretty well just at times the wifi seems sketchy.  Does anyone know if this 868 will be good enough, or should I wait for the DGL-5500.  Also forgot to mention my isp is verizon fios on quantum 150 dl/ 65 ul package.  Wired devices actually achieve those speeds no problem with any speed test, but wifi is not even close.  Also most of the devices I've listed don't work on 5gz band to my knowledge.  Would I be able to run the 5ghz devices on the new router on 5 and the rest of my devices that don't support it on 2.4?  Sorry for the long winded post, just trying to get as much info as I can before I run out and buy a new router.  Looking to make the purchase asap if it's going to be worth it.  Thanks in advance for any help.  ;D

When testing Speedtest over wireless, results may not be accurate due to many variables and conditions of WiFi. Wired is preferred for speed testing.

The DIR 8 series routers and dual band simultaneous WiFi routers so both 2.4 and 5Ghz radios are going at the same time unlike the 4500 and 628 were you have to pick one or the other.

Thanks for the response!  So that being said my next question is for a huge gaming household, would I benefit from waiting for the DGL 5500 in any way?  Also how did you get the xbox 360 on 5ghz?  I was always under the impression it only uses 2.4!

If your a big gaming house hold, I might wait for the 5500 to come out. You could go over to Best Buy or Frys or some place that has the 868L for sale and if they have a refund policy, give it a try. I think the 5500 is due to arrive next month however I don't have accurate information as of yet.

For 5Ghz on game consoles:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Acess Points (AP)

I currently have 1 xbox connected to a DIR-865L in bridge mode wireless to a DIR-810L. Getting AC connection speeds.  ;D

Will do!  Got one more quick question.  Being that I have no AC compatible devices, would this new router still increase wifi speeds on my current devices?

Could maximized the max supported wifi connection speeds that each device can handle.  ;)
