Title: AVI's (divx xvid ) Greyed/Whitened out
Post by: jimea on August 06, 2008, 08:32:43 AM
I use a DMS-510 fw 1.07 , just bought. I use TVersity as mediaserver.

I can play photos, mp3, and .mpg for instance, but no .avi so far, they are all greyed/whitened out.

Any codec issues ( I have set TVersity to transcode when needed ) or other settings that may need tweaking?
Any suggestions of what might be wrong, solutions?

Thx in advance for answering!

What are your divx and xvid videos extensions .divx or .xvid? Try changing the extension to .avi

All extensions are avi...

What are the file properties when you right click on the file and goto properties in Windows?

One example:

width: 640
Height: 272

bitrate: 122
Audioga: mpeg layer 3
framerate: 25/s
data rate: 144/s

ALL .avi files are not available to play through the DSM-510, other formats plays just fine.

Photos and music  plays just fine, mpeg and else, just fine...

But NO .avi are available to play!

It is a known problem between the DSM-510 and TVersity, as I remember. You have to go and check the TVersity forum. People have posted updates to the profiles.xml file so that avi files are served with the right mime type for this player. As a matter of fact, for every UPnP AV server out there, people post "special" settings for the DSM-510 for avi files.

If memory serves, one of the reviewers on amazon.com posted changes to the xml file as well.

I hope this is enough information to get you started. Best of luck.

PS: Another problem with avi files is the "unsupported format" message on the player. For that, you need to check (and possibly change) the FourCC codes in the file (to XVID).

PPS: avi files that play very jerky (sound is ok) have sometimes been encoded with QPEL or GMC. Although part of MPEG4 part 2 ASP, the player does not support it.

You may want to try WMP11 as the server you may have more desirable results.

Please see the FAQ link below for setup instructions:

<Sarcasm>
ECF,
Can you tell me how to install WMP11 on a DNS-323?  ::)  WMP11 has alot of nice features that the DNS-323 does not have...  LOL

It didn't work with the profile that was linked, I guess I have to search around and do somre trial and error.

WMP11 does not recognize the DSM-510, it just says unkown device, why I wanted to go with TVersity.
I'll update this thread if I ever get the DSM-510 working, I'm really close to getting another brand and go "Office Space" on the 510...  >:(

Even though it says Unknown device you should still be able to allow the device and share media to it.

Maybe so, but it doesn't work.
I don't like WMP11 at all.

I'll try to get the settings in TVersity to work, or some other server...

In the meanwhile, photos and music streams perfectly, and mpeg movies.
For avi, I use a USB flash drive *sighs* ...

So much for plug-n-play, as the manual suggests.

I'm getting by, and I really hope support for .srt is coming soon, as promised.

jimea,
What exactly does not work ?
I use this modified profile for tversity http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8471&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
and codecs setup for transcoding from here http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=8063

So far all is running fine. I can play all video types with external or internal subtitles.

Yes.. This profile works with 1.0.0.3 too. Without this profile mod, Divx will not run.. CE

Thank you guys for your input.

Could I be so bold to ask one of you to e-mail me your profiles.xml for TVersity?

I'm trying to get it right, but just in case, I would really like to be able to just replace mine with one that works for sure for you.

Would be very thankful!   jim@etarak.com

I was using wrong programs to edit the xml profile, with notepad++, I did it once more, and now it works fine. Thank you all SO much!

Now, what to do with that PS3 I got to replace the DSM-510...   :P
