Hi All,

Need help here.. My DNS 323 was working fine for a month and all of a sudden this afternoon start to act weird. Here's what happened. I was transferring files from my ubuntu box to it. Then suddenly it stopped (forgot the error message) tried to refresh the file explorer.. nada.. so naturally I tried accessing the web admin console. Still nothing

Tried sshing into it (I have fun_plug installed) success. Now since I can't access it share / web admin.
Next logical thing to do (according to me) Was to just reboot the unit. Which I did thru shell.
After rebooting. I was able to access web admin. But.... it reported that Drive 1 not formatted!!!
It's acting like I just plugged in a new hard drive. So obviously I skipped it.

What do I have to do guys? I'm almost certain that my data is still intact. But how do I retrieve them?
Can I use a sata enclosure or something and mount them on my ubuntu box? Or is there an easier way? Since I currently don't have any sata enclosure.

Firmware 1.06
HDD used ST31500341AS Vol 1 (1.5 TB Seagate 7200.11)
     ST31500341AS Vol 2

if you have an Ubuntu box try putting the hard drive in that machine and see if the drive is okay with an fschk.
The format is EXT2 so Ubuntu can handle it no prob.

problem is my ubuntu box is an old laptop
so i guess my only option is buying an external sata enclosure right?

you can buy a cable that does USB to PATA and SATA.
very handy tool to have.  ran me $40 CAD.

you can also find software to mount the EXT2 in windows but you will not likely be able to do any drive testing with it.

Another option is if you have a desktop run an Ubuntu disk in live CD mode (boot from CD and continue running from CD)

Thanks for the info. Yeah I am going to purchase a USB to PATA/SATA today.

I can't hook it up to any of my existing desktop since they don't have SATA port (yeah they're pretty old).

Btw anybody know what I have to do to recover the files once its hooked up on a linux (ubuntu)box?
Since I never had to recover any file under linux.

All,

Finally bought a usb sata cable. I attached the affected hdd onto the ubuntu box.

Here's all what is left :

try an fschk on that disk and see what it returns

found tons of inode error such as :

wow, seeing that much... your drive may be toast.

I'm out of my league now... any linux experts out there that can pitch in?

My feeling was that there were physical errors and it looks like that is the case.

after the check is done you may get back some file or some lost chains.

Yeah I think my drive is toast.. I was recommended to use Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery.
I run it for about 12hr and it only covered like 5% so far.
But the files that it reported is totally garbage (.bmp, .mp3). Just FYI this drive did not contain .bmp nor mp3.

But this is really mind boggling. How could a simple transfer from linux box to it destroyed the superblock etc.

I'm beginning to regret purchasing this DNS323. I was a bit reluctant using dlink product again after all the fiasco with DI624 rev c O well I guess I have to just suck it up and definitely this will be my last DLINK unit.
