932L Internet usage
« on: August 29, 2011, 12:22:58 PM »

I have an limited plan from Rogers Canada :( (15Gb/month), and I have exceeded my d/l limits for 2  straight months since setting up my camera. Now, I have email notification set up and I can record up to 200 captures a day ( each file averages about 30kb). I assume that only a few hundred Mb per month.
Also I would view the live cam roughly two dozen times a day, for about a minute each, just to check on my apartment.
I hardly ever use my internet at home for browsing and downloading, so I am wondering if these cameras are constantly streaming, even when I am not viewing at MyDlink. Does anyone know, or can anyone share their experience? Thanks for any feedback.

Generally speaking, video is streamed from the DCS-932L over the Internet ONLY when a user signs into your mydlink account and selects the DCS-932L video stream for viewing.

There are exceptions to this rule, such as bypassing mydlink and establishing a live video feed from your DCS-932L over the Internet, but based on your post, I don't think this applies to you.

You can reduce your bandwidth usage by logging into the DCS-932L web interface and throttling down the frames per second (FPS), reducing the image size, and disabling audio.

I failed to mention a HUGE bandwidth saver. If you leave the DCS-932L in night mode, the bandwidth usage will drop considerably. Night mode video is in Black and White, which uses considerably less bandwidth than the color video in day mode.

If this camera pushes the limits of your data plan, then you definitely need to upgrade. :)
Best of luck.
