Add-on lens?
« on: April 24, 2012, 02:01:46 PM »

Has anyone any experience with adding (teleconverter) lenses onto these cameras to reduce the angular field of view?
I'm interested in being able to read license plates.

Interesting idea.  I have a magnetic lens for my Flip camera. If I can manage to find where I put the thing (I haven't seen it in weeks) I'll see how it performs on the DCS-932L.

JavaLawyer, did you ever get a chance to try that lens?

We moved recently (living out of boxes!), and  I'm still searching for where that lens is packed ???
I'm also very eager to test this out. . . if I ever find the lens.

I finally tracked down the magnetic lens for my Flip camera and tested it on the DCS-932L. The wide angle lens definitely increased the camera field of view by perhaps 10-15 degrees on the left and right sides of the frame, but given the camera's vantage point, the increased field of view didn't really add any significant value. I'm curious how a teleconverter would work.

Did you notice if the lens affected the auto-focusing?

I didn't notice a difference, but will check again. Keep in mind that the lens I'm using doesn't change the focal length, it's just widening the field of view.

Another point to note is that the DCS-932L frame does not contain metal parts to support the magnetic lens. The lens came with an adheisive ring that sticks to the frame around the circumference of the DCS-932L lens. The magnetic lens, in turn, is attracted to the ring.
