DIR-632 slow throughput on lan
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:05:32 AM »

DIR-632A.  I get only 900kB/s when transferring files between two computers on the network which are both connected via wired ethernet.  If I plug in my old Dlink router (also 10/100) I get around 9MB/s. So I know its not a problem with the wiring or the computers (one running Vista the other Win 7).  Latest firmware applied and I also tried a 3rd party firmware (DD-WRT) with no change. Any ideas?

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

ISP and DNS settings seem irrelevant here, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm talking about file transfers between two computers on the LAN.  Dlink firmware was 1.01na but now I'm currently on a 3rd party firmware (DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/20/11) std - build 18024).  I was hoping switching firmware would help but it didnt. I can switch back to the Dlink firmware if needed.  Turning QOS off didnt help and UPNP is enabled.  Tried both static and dhcp IPs.

You'll need to consult the DD-WRT forum for that FW. This forum is for OEM FW.

One solution, get a external Gb network switch installed between the router and PCs.

Not to be argumentative because I appreciate the help, but this also happened on the DLink firmware as well.  I can switch back if that is necessary.  I'm not really tied to the other firmware, I just tried it out because I was hoping it would help.  I could use a 2nd router, but I'd like to just have this one perform as it is supposed to.  It's like I'm only getting 10mbps connection instead of 100.

I would presume that there could be a problem with the router, especially trying WRT. However my suggestions are for OEM FW.

Are you getting any indication that you are connecting at 100Mb on the PCs network settings when connected to the 632? Might try to see if you can set the NIC property speed settings from Auto to Manual 100.

Only other things I would try is different cables or swap to be sure cables are good. Even though they look good and seem to work on other routers, I have seen it where they don't work right elsewhere.

Only thing I suggest is to fully go back to OEM FW and test again. Once you get the OEM FW back on, do one more factory reset then test.

Again, Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.

After this, it's possible your unit could be defective. How long have you had the 635

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try that. Both nics are configured for 100 full duplex. Maybe I just have a bad router. I just looked and it is a couple weeks beyond my 1 year warranty.  Go figure. My fault though. I should have addressed it sooner. I just haven't needed the full bandwidth until recently, though I'm pretty sure it's always acted this way.

I would contact DLink and ask them to see if they might help, even if it's past warranty. You never know, might do an RMA and send you a new router.

Just wanted to post back resolution on this.  Seems it was a problem with one of the computers.  I tried a different dlink gigabit router and was still having the problem.  Put in a new gigabit network card on the main media server computer and now all is better.  Thanks for your help.
