dir-632 or modem or cable?
« on: January 06, 2012, 07:23:36 AM »

I have had my dir-632 for a year.  It has performed flawlessly.

This week, I've started losing my internet connection about every 4-5 hours.  (not just wifi)  My ethernet attached devices lose the internet.  My wireless devices no longer even see the SSID.  A simple reboot of he router fixes it all.

Where to I start to look for what the trouble is so I can fix it?

Comcast says they can see no problem with my connection and re-provisioned me but that did not fix.
My cable modem is a Motorola SURFboard 6120 DOCSIS - 18 months old.

The only change to my echosystem :) in the past few months is the addition also this week of a netbook connected only wirelessless to the the rest - I cannot imagine this is killing the system connection but I mention it because it's the only new thing.

Any tips for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Susan

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. Having other near by routers can effect yours.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) options. Advanced/QoS.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Thank you for the checklist.

The first items cause me the most pause. The implication is that my connection to the internet (wired AND wireless) can be compromised by a wireless device?  Is this true?  I use several wireless devices on this network successfully for a year but adding one more - a simple windows asus netbook - can make the internet connection reset every 4-5 hours?  Really? wow.

I'm referring to the near by wifi routers around your neighborhood or apartment complex. Those can have an impact on your router as well. As more people buy routers, more interferences are seen.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer. If needed.
