DIR-632 and WRT
« on: December 13, 2011, 02:34:46 PM »

Just FYI, it's possible to load this type of FW on to the router however be aware that you'll void any warranties or the ability to RMA these units should they be defective with DLink.

WRT is pretty good, however does have a complicated UI. Not for the faint of heart.  ::)

I would hightly recommend that you allow some of us in the forums help you trouble shoot any problems first before trying to load WRT. If we can find a solution then, by all means WRT can be a last resort.

Maybe DasShrubber2 can be our resident WRT expert for the DIR-632 router.  ::)

I could, or the people posting here can always help.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=77729&start=75

A couple of people of switch over to the dd-wrt firmware and are really happy with the stability.  Cosmetically it still has some bugs, the LEDs don't always flash correctly, but it runs and runs and runs...

Thats kewl man.

I would like for those looking for help with there routers to get help with what is currently loaded on there routers, OEM FW, first. No opposed to other alternatives however lets see if we can help them with there initial problems first as upgrading FW or using WRT might not fix there problems. Other issues can be at hand and should be identified. Once thats figured out and if we can't help them resolve there problems, then b all means, WRT man.

;D And it keeps running and running 8).  The run time would be much higher but I was adding an external USB HD for network backups.

This problem seems pretty prevalent.
Can we expect DLINK to provide a new firmware release to correct the issue?

I'd rather not go WRT if I don't have to.

The connection drops and the router needs a reboot daily.

Need to trouble shoot the router and your network first off.
What do you mean by dropping connection?
How are you connected to the router? Wired or Wireless?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Tried all this when you sent the same to several other people.
As it was with them ... no success.

Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/20/11) std
Time: 20:52:23 up 18 days, 3:31

Yes it would be nice if DLink fixed there firmware.  DD-WRT is not perfect, but at least is runs.

D-Links FW runs as well. Not all problems are attributed to FW. Many other factors contribute to routers not working.

Agreeded.  I love the hardware, but the firmware a little less so.
