connection lost only with iphones
« on: August 24, 2015, 11:40:30 AM »

both my girlfriend and I(separate houses) have these routers provided by Cablevision with their Optimum internet service.  I have an iphone 5s, she has the iphone 6.  Both phones constantly lose wifi connection at both houses.  It only seems to happen for a moment at a time, but It makes playing games or streaming music impossible.  And it happens constantly, like every couple of minutes.  We do not have this problem with any other devices in either home(tablets, laptops, game consoles, apple tv, amazon fire stick, etc).  Neither of our phones has this issue anyplace else.  Internet provider blames the issue on either the router or the phones.  Any help?  I have to believe this is a known issue?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.

What iOS is loaded on the phones?

IF the router was provided by your ISP, then it may need to be supported by them as some ISP handle there own firmware and support on D-Link branded hardware.

Hello bfuccillo,

Although the router is Power by D-Link, the firmware loaded on those devices is supported ONLY by Cablevision Internet Service Provider since is different then the D-Link branded devices. If Cablevision is your service provider, they should be able to help with this situation. I'm not sure how far in the troubleshooting you have gone, but I personally had a problem with my iPhone 5s dropping connection until I reset my network settings on my phone (Warning: when you reset your Network Settings, you will lose all previously configured Wi-Fi connections profiles). This process allows you to start fresh saving only your new Wi-Fi connection profiles. Now, this may have worked for me, but it does not mean it will fix your issue... it may be worth trying though.

If nothing else is dropping and your phones don't  behave  the same way with other connection, it may be a wireless setting that must be change on your Wi-Fi configuration... try finding a setting called Short GI. You want to have that disable/off and give a try connecting with your phones again. Hope it helps!

Come back if you still have issues!
