Xbox Live videos quit working when using router
« on: July 29, 2013, 08:29:46 PM »

For the past month, I have been enjoying my Xbox Live and internet together (Xbox is wired to the router, desktop and laptop are wireless).  For some reason, on July 16th, I could no longer get videos to play on Xbox live, using Xbox Video, Amazon Instant Video, Halo Waypoint, Hulu Plus, etc.  On July 15th, videos worked fine.  On the 16th, they didn't.  If I bypass the router and connect the Xbox to the modem, things work fine, but I can't surf the interwebs while this is happening.  If the kids want to watch a show, I can't be online, and vice versa.

I have a DIR-826L with firmware 1.01 (whatever came loaded on it), after the problem started, I tried an IP address reserved for the xbox, ports forwarded (uPnP didn't work anymore), manual settings on the Xbox to match what the router is set for, deleted system cache, deleted & redownloaded profile, etc., etc., etc.  Nothing is working.

I'm just at a loss as to why things would work fine one night and not the next when no settings changed, nothing was done except turn the xbox off and then on the next day.  No power surge to harm the router (plugged into a 2600J spike strip anyway).  Why does it work fine when the router is bypassed?  What am I missing?  I'm seriously considering returning this thing and getting a wireless Netgear -- as my previous wired Netgear router never had problems -- unless I can get this thing resolved.

Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

    I am in KS.
As I stated in my first post, I have the Xbox wired to the router.  I've done more than one factory reset of the router along with several reboots of the cable modem and router.  My desktop is connected on the 5GHz band, the laptop will only connect on the 2.4GHz band for some reason (the wireless adapter built in to the laptop?), and the laptop has trouble playing videos as well (hangs part way through as if it's buffering, but never continues).  I haven't tried wiring the laptop to the router, but I may do that tonight to update the firmware, and I'll check how videos play before I do that.

      Motorola SB5101U

This is in line with what is advertised for the cable internet package I am paying for (and this test was done from a PC that is connected wirelessly to the router).

I really doubt that the cable modem is the issue since the X360 plays everything just fine when the router is bypassed (router unhooked from the cable modem and taken out of the equation) and wired directly to the modem.

As I stated in my first post, my setup was working wonderfully for about a month before problems started.  This isn't like I started having problems on an initial setup.  I turned the xbox off one night after watching a TV show and turned it on the next evening to find that videos wouldn't play.  I can play Halo multiplayer just fine.  It's only watching videos and downloading games that won't work.  Nothing was changed from one day to the next.

Problem:  I want the parental filter enabled (I have teenage boys...).  Disabling it is not an option.  The parental filter has been active since day one, so I fail to see how this could suddenly cause problems when it didn't before.  If the DLink routers won't work with XBL while the parental filter is active, then it's not the router for this family and I need to look elsewhere.

These last two contradict each other.  Do I reserve an IP address, or have the device obtain one?  Right now, I have an address reserved for the X360 with the two PCs obtaining one automatically.  I set the X360 manually to the same address I reserved on the router.  Still no good.

I'll work on the rest of these tonight.  However, gaming is not an issue.  Playing online works great through the router.  Playing videos and downloading games from the XBL Marketplace is the issue.  I started with uPnP enabled and it worked until it quit.  Switching to port forwarding hasn't helped.

This could be a XBL video issue and not a router issue. I have seen it where videos in market place arent working or seen to sudder and lag. CoD Ghosts is one.

Except they work fine 30 seconds later when I bypass the router and plug the Xbox directly into the cable modem.  This affects videos on Halo Waypoint, Xbox Video, Amazon Instant Video, and Hulu Plus.  It has to be some settings on the router (or my router has crapped out in some fashion since things worked fine the day before and quit less than 24hrs later with no change in any settings...)

The two suggestions do not contradict each other, rather understanding that reserving IP addresses ON the router first, then setting ALL devices to automatically obtain that IP address on the devices and do not set an static IP address on the device. I would remove the static IP address ON the xbox. The reason for reserving the IP address ON the router is to let the router always hand out the same IP address per device each and every time the connect to the router. Avoids conflicts and helps in trouble shooting and is needed when setting up filters and such.

Give the XBL sticky a try....Seems that there could be a configuration issue here.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Well, none of the suggestions worked, and the XBL sticky didn't work either.  Still no good.  I may have to take some time on Saturday to do that teamviewer thing.

Well, it's a mixed bag, actually.  Updated the FW just fine.  Now, the 5GHz band has spotty connectivity, and the xbox gets disconnected from XBL randomly.  Downloading something takes forever due to that.  Amazon videos will get part way through and then get kicked off.  I'm trying to track things down through the Amazon app, but if the Xbox Video app does the same thing, then that will tell me that it's the connection.

Ok, what I was afraid of. Seems like the problem is getting worse. I'm going to recommend that you return the 826L to the place of purchase if you are still in warranty there or get on the phone with D-Link support. Ask for level 2 support as you can tell them that we've walked through all the troubleshooting and FW updates. I wish we could have done more or the FW might have fixed it.

Please let us know how it goes.

Would posting the log help?  There's a ton of this:
    Quote
Aug  7 20:33:46 dlinkrouter user.info Wireless[xx]: [MAC address I think] client had deauthenticated and disconnected
Aug  7 20:33:50 dlinkrouter user.info Wireless[xx]: [MAC address I think] new Client is connected to network
Granted, that's the desktop and not the Xbox, but it happens a ton.  I was playing an offline game with my boys around 19:30, and the xbox repeatedly popped up the message "you are now signed out of Xbox Live" and a minute or so later "Connected to Xbox Live."
