Setting security so others cannot access wifi? Please help
« on: June 05, 2011, 08:32:11 PM »

I have a desktop pc and bought the DIR-601 so I could use my IPod touch. Everything works good but I think one or two other people ,possibly neighbors are using my wifi. Today I used my iPod and checked under general settings and noticed a wireless name I did not set up but then it disappeared. Also on dlink account online a few months back I was trying to do something with account, security and noticed one or two connections I didn't set up. What are the steps securing router, wifi so others cannot access or use ? Thank you for your help.

First off you need you change the Password for the log in page for the router.
You should find this under Tools/Admin I believe. Can be any password thats easy for YOU to remember. Don't give this out.

Then you need to set up the WiFi broadast SSID name for something you know and can easily find. Can be anything. This is under Setup/Wireless settings/Manual Wireless.

You can turn off Protected WiFi unless you have devices that use the one touch button to connect.

I would recommend setting the 802.11 mode from Mixed to Single mode G or Mixed G and N if you have any N mode supported devices.

Then change the Wireless Security Mode to WPA Personal
Change WPA Mode to WPA2 only is preferred or Auto if you can't seem to get connected.
Cipher type is TPIK and AES. AES only is preferred.
Pre-Shared Key can be any password you choose and is easy for YOU to remember.

Apply and save. Then your neighbors won't be using your router anymore.

Let us know how it goes.
