I would call this a contaminated unit. It may have pass some sort of RMA testing and deemed usable electronically, however the internal parts are contaminated. I wouldn't be accepting of this.

Sounds like Dlink is pushing out recycled products to help keep their overhead low  :-\

Keep us posted on how it goes Kargo.

I spoke with the RMA department and the customer service lady said she'd give her manager/supervisor the info and that he'd call me back in 24-48 hours.  That was on Friday but I haven't heard from him yet.

FIX -

OK, after a LOT of troubleshooting with the help of Furry, we found a fix to my issue.

I have AT&T UVerse for TV but Charter High Speed for internet.  The UVerse uses a Wireless Access Point (WAP) which connects to the UVerse residential gateway (3801HGV).

My first 857 wasn't affected by being in close proximity to this WAP so I didn't give it much thought when troubleshooting my subsequent, refurbed 857's.

Well, come to find out these last routers are very susceptible to interference from the WAP on both 2.4Ghz and 5.2Ghz.

I moved the WAP about 12-14 feet away from the 857 and my wifi signal strength and connectivity have stabilized.

So, if any of you have ANY WAP's of any type near your 857, I would strongly suggest you moving them as far from the 857 as possible.  Save yourself a headache and disappointment.

Glad we were able to find the fix.

Just so everyone knows, having multiple APs near others will cause connection stability issues, specially on the same Freq, even though they are running different channels. Unless your running one AP on one Freq, i.e 2.4 and another one a different Freg, i.e. 5Ghz, that can work ok if in close proximity. In most cases using multiple APs, it's always recommended to place them as far away as possible from each other and host routers with wireless built in, as a standard.

Glad it's working better for you Kargo.

Enjoy.
