Lagspikes and connection dips
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:23:38 AM »

Heya.

I have a little problem here and after visiting a lot of forums where people don't know what the cause might be and doing countless things, i wanted to have a go on the Dlink forum itself so here I am.

First I'll describe my home-network set up after which i will explain what the problem exactly is and what i have done to try and solve it.

The situation:
I got a Ubee modem and a D-link router, both wireless.
The ubee modem is downstairs and the D-link router is upstairs.

The Ubee modem has IP: 192.168.178.1   , DHCP turned on within the range of 192.168.178.10 - 192.168.178.33

In the LAN1 port of it there is a cable leading upstairs to my D-link router where it enters the D-links LAN1 port.  The D-link has IP: 192.168.178.10 and his DHCP and UPnP are turned off.  Both modem and router have different network names and keys and different channels for transmitting.

i have computers in my house ( 3 desktops and 2 laptops) all connected wireless to the D-link router.

The problem:
When I'm playing online games or listening to webradio i often get huge lag spikes, 3 to 4 seconds long. In game ( world of warcraft most times) i get ping-raises for up to 1000 MS latency for over 3 minutes following one of those lagspikes. The webradio just stops for 5 seconds then starts rebuffering to continue playing, sometimes completely shutting out until i reload the .pls file

It occurs on different times of the day, theres no wireless phones in the neighbourhood of the router nor computer transmitting on the same frequency. There is no lag spikes when connected to the modem instead of the d-link. The lag spikes don't occur on all PC's at the same time. ( i played wow with a friend here, we had lag spikes in turns, or sometimes disconnects, while sitting right next to each other).

My wireless signal according to the router is 80% or higher at all times. inSSIDer ran a log while having lag spikes and it stated that the signal never dropped below -50 DBi.

I pinged the D-link router while having a lag spike using command prompt. it said the following:
bytes: 32  time: 420 ms TTL=64
bytes: 32  time: 1427 ms TTL=64
bytes: 32  time: <1 ms TTL=64
bytes: 32  time: 1025ms TTL=64

when i don't have lag spikes it reports an average of 1 or 2 ms. sometimes <1 ms.

I have tried:
as you can see i gathered some facts about the network already. the lag spikes occur on different moments and to my knowledge quite random. The lag spikes only occur with the d-link router.

The non DHCP set-up was one of my attempts which failed. at first i had the router just configured on factory standards and the cable between modem and router running from modems LAN1 to routers WAN. ( this is the set-up as its was at first).

i hope someone here can help me fix this problem cause its getting pretty annoying :(

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Seems like the modem is a built in router. Can you bridge the modem to the router?
If not then I might try to put the 635 router in the modems DMZ.

Is QoS enabled? Try turning it off?
nsure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Hey, thank you for your reaction, it's contains much possibilities ( which is a good thing cause then I can test all at once) . Since I'm a bit short in time I will be testing the router tomorrow or the day after. I will let you know the results.

edit:
I have a cable ISP,  its called Ziggo ( its the biggest in The Netherlands).

Could this spikes be causing the problems?

The red line you see peaking there is the soft54M network.
The selected network (sitecom ) showed a peak allso just before

I tried changing channels a few times before i got inSSIDer.. but now i have been logging a few minutes i see theres enourmess spikes from other networks in my area... Its possible my modem doesnt have this problem since its running on a 5GHZ frequency ( the only router in the neighbourhood that does this).

Might it be helpfull if i set up my router to use 40 mhz signal width instead of 20?

The dip in my own connection at the start is cause i moved my laptop to another room before, to check my signal strength there... then i started noticing those peaks and wanted to check if it was the same in other rooms XD

Im not sure if this is the cause. My main reason for this is because of the thing that happened when i was gaming with my friend ( how come only one of us both gets the lagspike while being connected to the same router).

Thanks in advance

Try changing to Channels not being used.
Can try changing to 40 from 20 if your devices support the 40Hz.

hey thanks again for the reply.

I changed to 40 MHz last week. also tried going to a channel on which the spikes didn't occur. unfortunately for me, there isn't any of those channels.  Some time next week I'm going to the store to buy a new router with 5 GHz support since all of the 5 GHz channels are unoccupied, thanks for the help

hey i eventually just decided to pull a cable... ( 12 meters allong the ceiling)  and palced a normal (not wireless) router on it. from here it spreads to most computers.

I cant find a fix to the problem so i guess it's just tough luck.. The 5 GHz  network works fine. However most my computers and other network devices dont support 5GHz.

Thanks for all the help and feedback,

Possible that your area is just very busy with other 2.4Ghz WiFi and is a cause of interference. 5Ghz is working as there is probably not many routers around running on that frequency. Hope your LAN cable resolution works well for you.
