Yet another wireless dropped connection thread-
« on: January 07, 2015, 10:52:47 AM »

Hi Furry,

I do not want to start a new thread for pretty much the same problem, I see from reading these threads you are dealing with this issue over the forums.
I am not as advanced technically in networking but I would like to take the time to explain whats been going on for me.

I am writing here after exhausting my resources with customer services and tech support from d-link.
Basically what is going on is that about 2 weeks ago my internet glitch or something(maybe a surge?) and I had to reboot the modem and router to reinitialize it. Once everything up and running my wifi no longer made it to my room downstairs for my laptop and pc(phone could barely capture it) and when my laptop did capture the signal no internet was available... to have internet connected or not with signal I had to be about 10 feet away.

So I reset the router, recreated the ssid and updated my firmware(was out of date anyway) but to no avail still had issues BUT the wifi signal was back to reaching downstairs. Also I tried changing the channels but for some reason every device was saying internet connection unavailable, so I put back original channel.

Only now I noticed my issue, is that multiple connections bog down and fail randomly while surfing, let me explain better.

1 - Laptop(2.4ghz) playing netflix and I am streaming along just fine while browsing facebook on my phone(5ghz) and then I decide to look at a website on my laptop(any website) and I cannot connect to the internet on the new tab. Netflix is still streaming just fine, but then my phones internet will stop working. This also happens with my Ps3 connection is 100% but I cannot access PSN most the times if any other connection is established. I am forced to reboot modem and router every 30mins or so to access different websites or devices.

Another example is last night I was on the phone ViA Line messenger(data) came home it connected to the wifi and the conversation continued, but then I went to look at my phone and it said I did not have a network connection and could not access any other feature that used data(but I was obviously using internet since I was talking)

My router is the DIR-857, I just moved into this new place and originally thought maybe it was the slow internet speeds(5mb/s) that was just being eaten up by the devices so I changed it last night to 30mb/s see if this would help. Alas problems persist and I am annoyed with it lol. it is very strange to have access to certain parts of the internet and not others.

I have had the ISP come and check the connections when he changed the modems and he says I have great reception. The router was flawless before this and I really do not want to go out and purchase a new one...

I know this may be a bit jumbled cause I am trying to explain as well as possible

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
    • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
    • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
    • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
    • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
    • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
    • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

    Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
    • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
    • What wireless modes are you using?
    • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
    • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
    • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
    • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
    • What wireless devices do you have connected?
    • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
    • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
    • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
    • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

    Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Ok please post back about your ISP modem.

MTU for your cable ISP should be 1500. Thats under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Be aware that the official v1.04 may inhibit QoS from working with your ISP uplink speed of 10Mb as it's capped at 2Mb if you are using QoS. If you choose to use the mod FW, then you can avoid the cap.

Also you might want to install a Laptop cooler under the router as well. Canadian users have expressed some experiences with heating problems causing WiFi to be bad: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50878.0

There was much talk about QoS and Up-link speeds that some users had that were over 2Mb or well over that. The contention was that this router and a few others, that QoS would not work correctly or at all on these higher Up-link speeds. Some said that if users had over 2Mb up-link speeds, that QoS may not be really needed. D-Link never really addressed it on these models however finally came out with a different QoS engine that worked well 2Mb and over Up-link speeds on follow on router models. Unfortunately they didn't choose to change this on these few models. So a user came up with a work around modification for these few routers:
    http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=57919.0

All is the same accept users can now manually input a higher up-link value in QoS...
