I bought 3 DES-1228p switches last year along with 23 DWL-3140AP's. I installed them at the hotel over a 3 day period and finally configurd them with Dlink's biz class phone support. Everyone was happy with this setup, except for when the switches got power cycled with firmware 1.20 and they turned into red xmas trees and needed to be reset with a paperclip, then reconfigured from scratch. All was good when firmware 1.31 was released.

Today, I received a fourth DES-1228p switch along with six DWL-3140AP's to install in the expanded meeting rooms. It was a heck of a time. I ended up resetting the entire system back to defaults and starting over several times. I called Dlink support again, but was told my warranty expired. I wish to not think of the conversation that ensued. So after reconfiguring the entire system from defaults and making one change at a time, I got everything to work again, EXCEPT for when trying to change the private SNMP password from 'private' to something else. What happens is I get "unknown device' with question marks in my WLAN Manager under Monitor AP.

I'm assuming it's not safe to leave the private SNMP password on 'private', right? If so, how do I go about changing it and having my AP's detected afterwards?

As long as you are changing the SNMP communities in the order AP->Switch->WLAN Manager you should be fine.  You will lose access to each of those sets of devices as you progress, but should get it back after the last step.

So AP->Switch->WLAN Manager?

->How do I change the community string on the AP's?
->On the switches it's easy...http://192.168.1.10 - .13 (where .10 - .13 are my switch web interfaces), then System, SNMP Settings.
->On WLAN Manager, I do Tools, Discovery Wizard, then enter my SNMP password as my Discovery Password.

Hmmm?
