855 lowers max download speed
« on: February 25, 2009, 08:35:51 AM »

I have BeThere internet, with max 24Mb downstream and 1.3Mb upstream. I'm using the included free Speedtouch 585v6 setup in bridge mode acting as the modem. The modem always syncs at ~17.5Mb downstream so when I used to use the Speedtouch as the router and the modem I used to get downloads at 17.5Mb i.e. 2.1MB.

With the DIR-855 I can only get a maximum download of 13.6Mb i.e. 1.7MB. I've confirmed this with a number of different full-speed sources over the last 6 months: high-speed good torrents, extremely high-bandwidth servers e.t.c. The Speedtouch still syncs at ~17.5Mb, and even just now I tested it in router mode and I get the full speed it syncs at. Any ideas why the DIR-855 cannot use the full 17.5Mb that the Speedtouch syncs at?

P.S. I've tried modifying and turning off QoS, with no effect :(

Hmm, I'm guessing nobody else has this problem ;)

Try disabling the QoS engine.

I have a 100Mbs connection and I have no issues with the DIR-855 even with the most restrictive NAT endpoint filtering.

I'm not sure why, but leaving the wan port speed on auto rather than setting it manually seems to slow peoples connections down, as does enabling dynamic fragmentation (qos). The latter is understandable, the former who knows. It's possible it's one of the 855s bugs (new firmware plz?  :-*) but it's equally possible/probable that somewhere somethings simply wrog with your settings.

I just noticed a strange problem with my DIR-855. Suddenly I have the problem with the router lowering download speed. If I set the wan port speed manually it works ok for a short while then goes back to around 1Mbit download speed, I have 24Mbit down and 1 Mbit up from my supplier. Everything have been working just fine since october last year until yesterday. It is running on FW version 1.12EU. QoS is off. I havent tested to do a factory reset or tried another FW... Any idea of what I can do to fix this?

Kind regards,

Anders
